Hotel nYa is a design hotel set among tropical gardens that merge into Montezuma’s jungle, with interiors shaped by young Central American architects rather than a standard beach-resort template.

The mood is quiet and close to nature, but not cut off from local life. From your room, you can hear the jungle and, if the timing is right, watch capuchin and howler monkeys moving through the surroundings. It is the sort of place that suits you if your ideal evening involves a shower, something decent to eat and a bit of wildlife outside the window rather than a resort production team.

You are in central Montezuma, Costa Rica, directly beside the coast and within easy reach of the town’s beaches and local life. Montezuma Beach is about 0.2 miles away, with golden sand, sun loungers and parasols waiting when you decide that the day’s only serious decision should be whether to sit in the shade.

Parque Montezuma Zman is roughly 0.3 miles away, while the entrance to R Natural Absoluta Nicolás Wessberg is about 0.4 miles from the hotel. Montezuma Waterfall is around 0.8 miles away on foot. The wider area gives you walking, cycling, beaches, waterfalls and natural reserves, with Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve about 5 miles away.

The rooms are designed for a straightforward recovery routine: air conditioning for the hours when the Costa Rican heat has won, a desk if you need to sort photographs or answer one unavoidable message, and a private bathroom with shower, towels, toiletries and hairdryer. For two, the Deluxe King Room with Balcony gives you a super-king-size bed and outdoor space; the twin room with balcony is the sensible choice when sharing a room but not a bed. If you are travelling with family, the Standard Family Room is the practical option, with a king-size bed and a single bed; the accessible king room has wheelchair-accessible features, including grab rails and a raised toilet.

The garden setting is part of the night here. You get a room built around the surrounding vegetation rather than sealed off from it, with the sounds of the jungle supplying the soundtrack. Daily housekeeping, a safety deposit box and luggage storage take care of the less glamorous parts of travel.

Agrá Restaurante serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you can keep meals on site instead of starting another expedition whenever hunger arrives. Breakfast is continental and served à la carte, with service starting at 7 am. After an early start, that matters more than another decorative word for “fresh”.

The kitchen works with ingredients from local farms, fishermen and foragers. Its approach is described as wild gastronomy: local produce handled with more inventive techniques than a simple plate of beach-town staples. Lunch runs from noon to 4 pm, and dinner from 5.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

There is also a coffee house and a snack bar on site, with tea and coffee facilities available. Special-diet menus can be arranged, and packed lunches are available when your plans take you away from the table.

Yu Wellness is the place for the less athletic part of the holiday, with a relaxation area, spa facilities and treatments ranging from facials and Swedish massage to deep-tissue therapy, hot stones, reflexology and aromatherapy. Couples can book a couples massage; full-body, back and neck treatments are also available. After a demanding day outside, this is where you can let your shoulders remember that they are not permanently attached to your ears.

Yoga classes take place in natural settings, and fitness classes and personal training are available for anyone who still has energy to spend. Sun loungers and beach chairs cover the slower option. The hotel also has a garden, terrace, sun terrace, picnic area and outdoor fireplace, giving you several places to sit without being marched towards an organised activity.

When you want to leave the grounds, you can walk, cycle or hike in the area, join waterfall hikes or island tours, and explore local culture through organised tours and classes. Wildlife observation is part of the setting, while canoeing, fishing, horse riding and snorkelling are available away from the property. Montezuma Waterfall is close enough to make a realistic outing rather than a heroic undertaking.

Cobano Airport is about 5 miles away by road, and airport transfers are available through the hotel. Car hire is also available, while free private parking is provided on site without needing a reservation. Luggage storage, a tour desk, concierge service and private or express check-in and check-out help when your travel day refuses to run to plan.

Check-in runs from 3 pm to 8 pm, and you need to tell the hotel your expected arrival time. Check-out is from 7 am to noon. You must be at least 18 to check in; guests under 18 can check in with a parent or official guardian. Photo identification and a credit card are required at check-in, while cash is accepted as a payment method.

The hotel is non-smoking, pets are not allowed, and children of any age are welcome. Cots and extra beds for younger children can be requested, with the available arrangement depending on the room you choose. Laundry, ironing and babysitting services are also available.
