Mango Creek Resort puts you on Roatán’s East End, in Port Royal, with the sea built into the way you stay rather than treated as a distant backdrop. You have an all-inclusive base, an on-site restaurant, a bar, a private beach area and water-sports facilities, so the practical business of eating, resting and getting back outside is kept close at hand.

The resort suits you if you want island life without turning every meal or outing into a logistical exercise. Local staff, described as island-born and raised, look after the property, while the accommodation ranges from sea-view rooms to over-water cabanas with patios, hammocks and lounge chairs. It is a place for a slow evening, not a timetable packed with entertainment.

You stay at 5 Port Royal on Roatán, Honduras, in the island’s East End. The resort has its own private beach area, while Camp Bay Beach is about 1.5 miles away by road, roughly a three-minute drive. Springwater Resorts is around 2.4 miles away, or about six minutes by car.

This is not a town-centre base with a row of restaurants outside the gate. The nearest listed restaurants are around 13 miles away by road in the French Harbour area, including Romeos Restaurant and Gios Restaurant French Harbour, both about 24 minutes away by car. The on-site restaurant therefore matters rather more here than it would at a hotel surrounded by cafés.

Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport is about 18 miles away by road, with a drive of roughly 30 minutes. Port Royal is the address to put in your plans; Guanaja is a separate place and is not the resort’s booking location.

Sea view is the useful dividing line here. If you want to open the door and keep the Caribbean in sight between meals, the sea-view rooms and bungalows are the obvious choices. The over-water cabanas add a patio with a hammock and lounge chair, giving you somewhere to sit when the sensible plan is to do very little at all.

For a couple, the Deluxe Double Room with Sea View or the Bungalow with Sea View keeps the arrangement straightforward. If you are travelling as three, the larger Queen Room with Sea View, Deluxe Bungalow with Sea View or a triple room gives you more room to spread out than a compact double. Some units have a dining area as well as a seating area, which is handy when you have brought food back or simply want somewhere other than the bed to sit.

The rooms come with a fan, a private entrance, wardrobe or closet, a drying rack for clothing and a mosquito net. Several categories have a private bathroom with a shower or bath. Daily housekeeping keeps the room in order while you get on with the more important work of drying yourself, finding food and deciding whether the hammock has won the evening.

The all-inclusive formula covers the meals during your stay, with an on-site restaurant and bar keeping the essentials within easy reach. Breakfast is continental, with vegetarian and vegan choices, so you can start with something familiar before heading back towards the water.

Special-diet menus are available on request, and packed lunches can be arranged for days when your plans begin before sitting down properly. That is the sort of detail that earns its place in a diving holiday: lunch in a box is less glamorous than lunch at a table, but it does not argue with an early departure.

The bar also serves wine and champagne, while fruit is available among the food and drink options. No elaborate restaurant circuit is needed here; the point is having meals, a drink and a place to sit without turning dinner into a road trip.

The private beach area gives you an easy place to slow down, with sun umbrellas, outdoor furniture, a sun terrace, garden and terrace adding alternatives to lying directly on the sand. Snorkelling and water sports are available on site, so you can stay close to the water even when a full dive is not on the agenda.

For a little movement on land, you can choose hiking, darts or a cooking class. Canoeing and fishing broaden the options for a day when you want to be outside but not necessarily underwater, while a tour or class about local culture gives you something with more local flavour than another round of room-and-bar logistics.

Yoga is available for the gentle school of post-dive recovery, and massages are offered when your shoulders have had enough of carrying equipment and pretending otherwise. Families can use the indoor play area, board games and puzzles, with children’s meals also available.

An airport shuttle is available, and the resort’s own description also includes airport, hotel or port pickup and drop-off within the stay arrangements. Car hire is available if you plan to explore further, although Port Royal is a place where organising the transfer before arrival makes more sense than improvising at the terminal.

Check-in runs from 11:00 to 17:00, and you need to let the resort know your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 08:30 to 10:30. Express and private check-in and check-out are available, which can make the edges of the trip less fiddly.

WiFi is available in public areas and is free, daily housekeeping is provided, and laundry is available. Cash is an accepted payment method. Children of any age are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available, so choose the room around the actual number of people rather than hoping the furniture will perform a late rescue.
