Since the 1970s, Reef House Resort has been putting the useful parts of island life first: the sea, home-cooked food, a seaside bar and somewhere comfortable to sleep. Set on Oak Ridge Cay, it suits you if you would rather spend the day outside than in a large resort complex, with a private beach area and the water close at hand.

The atmosphere is easy-going and sociable without turning the whole evening into a compulsory programme. You have a shared lounge and TV area, live music, film nights and live sports broadcasts when you want company; when you do not, the beach, garden and terrace are perfectly practical places to disappear for a while.

The resort is in Oak Ridge, Honduras, on the eastern side of Roatán, with direct access to the beachfront and a private beach area. The setting gives you sea views, pool views and broad views across the water, with sunrise and sunset both part of the daily scenery rather than something requiring an excursion.

You are staying away from the island's better-known restaurant and bar clusters. Romeo's Restaurant and Gios Restaurant in French Harbour are both around 12 miles away by road, while Camp Bay Beach is about 5 miles away, a drive of roughly 12 minutes. Springwater Resorts is around 7 miles away by road; the resort can also arrange outings to the East End and other parts of the island.

The accommodation is designed for straightforward recovery rather than theatrical room design. Your room has air conditioning, a fan, a private bathroom with a shower, hot water, linen, a flat-screen cable TV and free Wi-Fi. Views face either the sea or the pool, so the choice is between looking towards the water or keeping an eye on the place where you may spend the afternoon.

For couples, a room with a sea view gives the evening a little more reason to stay in. The Queen Room works for up to three guests and uses two large king-size beds, making it the practical choice when you want proper sleeping space rather than a sofa bed doing overtime. Family rooms are available, while the resort's ocean-side suites and villas offer a choice of a king bed or two queen beds.

Daily housekeeping keeps the routine simple, and the air conditioning matters when you return warm, salty and ready to stop moving. Hardwood or parquet floors, a clothes rack and a private bathroom cover the basics without cluttering the room with distractions.

The restaurant cooks to order, from scratch, with local island favourites alongside cheeseburgers and generous portions of familiar food. This is the sort of menu that understands a diver may want something recognisable, filling and served without a lecture about culinary philosophy.

There is one beach bar, plus a snack bar for something less formal than a full meal. Special-diet menus are available on request. Breakfast times and the board formula are not part of the published details, so you will want to settle the morning routine with the resort rather than assume that the first boat and the first coffee run on the same timetable.

The seaside setting does some of the work. You can eat near the water, then move to the bar without organising a transfer or searching for another address in the dark.

The outdoor pool gives you a freshwater option when the sea has had enough of you, with loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas and pool toys around the leisure areas. There is also direct snorkelling from the private pier, so you can spend a quiet hour in the water without turning it into a full-day expedition.

For a slower afternoon, choose the garden, sun terrace, picnic area or outdoor furniture near the beach. Massage, foot massage, manicures, pedicures and other beauty services are available when your muscles have opinions about the previous day's activity. No special equipment is required beyond the ability to lie still for a while.

The resort can also arrange fishing and boat excursions, with options including mangrove tours, island tours, East End boat tours and wildlife outings involving iguanas, sloths and monkeys. Zip-lining, local bars and restaurants, swimming with dolphins and beach activities add alternatives for non-diving companions. A games room, board games and indoor and outdoor play areas keep the non-swimmers occupied, while evening entertainment, live music and film nights give the day somewhere to go.

Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport is about 16 miles away by road, with a driving time of roughly 28 minutes. An airport shuttle is available, and the resort also offers a shuttle service. If you are travelling via the mainland, ferries leave La Ceiba for Roatán in the morning or afternoon; direct flights from La Ceiba and from El Salvador are also available.

Check-in starts at 10:00 and check-out runs until 16:00, which is unusually useful if your travel day refuses to behave like a normal hotel timetable. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the resort asks you to share your expected arrival time in advance.

Concierge service, private check-in and check-out, luggage storage, lockers, currency exchange and grocery deliveries cover the small practical jobs that otherwise eat into an island day. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and the shared lounge provides a place to sit when your room is not the right setting for another cup of coffee.
