Aquatic Life Divers

Aquatic Life Divers operates out of Honokōhau Marina on the Big Island, providing a gateway to the volcanic underwater landscapes of Kona. The centre is built around a personalised approach, moving away from the crowded, rushed atmosphere of larger tour operators to ensure you have the space and attention required for a quality dive.

From the marina, you are less than 25 minutes away from more than 40 distinct dive sites. These range from vibrant reef flats to dramatic deep walls, lava tubes, and underwater caves, all shaped by the island's intense volcanic history.

As a PADI affiliated centre, the team focuses on professional instruction and high safety standards. They maintain a strict ratio of one guide for every two divers, ensuring close supervision whether you are on a routine morning dive or an advanced long-range excursion.

Instruction is conducted in English, and the centre offers specialised programmes including 'Wahine Under The Waves', which features an all-female crew for female divers. For those looking to refine their skills, they provide a range of PADI courses from entry-level certifications to advanced specialties.

A comprehensive range of PADI training is available, starting with Discover Scuba Diving and the Open Water Diver course. For those looking to progress, they offer the Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and several specialty courses such as Deep Diver, Underwater Navigation, and Night Diver.

Skill refinement is a core part of their offering, with courses including Peak Performance Buoyancy, Boat Diver, and Scuba Tune-Up. They also provide ReActivate programmes and training for specific equipment like Full Face Masks and Sidemount configurations, as well as DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle) instruction.

The centre utilises Armstrong catamarans, chosen for their stability and silent operation, which is particularly beneficial when approaching marine life. These vessels are designed for comfort, featuring spacious decks and tables suitable for camera work.

On board, you will find snacks, chilled beverages, and freshly brewed Kona coffee to enjoy between dives. The boats are well-equipped for various excursion types, including morning dives, twilight reef expeditions, and night dives. Nitrox is available for use on these trips.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit, including regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits. If you only require specific items, they also offer the hire of masks, snorkels, and fins.

For night diving, torches are provided, and GoPro cameras are available for rental to capture your underwater footage. Dive weights and air cylinders are also supplied, and the centre offers Nitrox fills for those requiring enriched air.

The waters around Kona are home to iconic species, including the Hawaiian green sea turtle (Honu) and long-nosed spinner dolphins (Nai'a). You will frequently encounter various manta rays, especially during the specialised night excursions.

In the deeper waters and during black water dives, the marine life shifts toward pelagic creatures, jellyfish, and siphonophores. These encounters are driven by the natural movement of organisms through the water column at night.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants include a variety of crustaceans and mollusks. The reefs are a complex ecosystem, providing a habitat for many smaller species that thrive among the volcanic structures.

Diving in this region is characterised by high visibility, which regularly exceeds 30 metres. The water temperature typically stays between 24°C and 27°C.

The area features diverse habitats ranging from shallow reef flats to deep walls and open-water environments, requiring divers to be prepared for different profiles depending on the chosen site.
