Extended Horizons

Based in Lahaina, Extended Horizons has been a fixture of the West Maui diving community for over 40 years. The centre operates with a deep commitment to the local ecosystem, holding the PADI Green Star Award and acting as a Project AWARE partner. Their focus on conservation is practical, having contributed to the installation of the first mooring buoys on Lanai.

From their shop in Lahaina, they coordinate both shore dives and boat excursions. For those heading out to the deeper sites, the meeting point is the Mala Boat Ramp. The operation balances technical expertise with a naturalist's eye, ensuring you understand the geology and biology of the Hawaiian islands while you dive.

The team is composed of certified instructors and guides who double as naturalists. This means your dive is not just about checking your computer; it is an opportunity to learn about endemic species and the specific ecology of the reef. They maintain a strict ratio of five divers per guide, ensuring personalized attention and safety on every outing.

As a PADI 5 Star centre, they offer a comprehensive educational path. Their expertise extends beyond basic training into specialized areas like coral reef conservation, shark awareness, and underwater naturalism. This academic approach is backed by four decades of local experience in the waters around Maui and Lanai.

Extended Horizons provides a full spectrum of PADI training, beginning with the Discover Scuba Diver program for beginners. They cover all core certifications, including Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and Rescue Diver, as well as the path to becoming a Divemaster.

For those looking to refine their skills or explore specific environments, they offer a wide range of specialties. These include Peak Performance Buoyancy, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Night Diver, and Underwater Navigation. They also offer niche courses such as Side-Mount Diver, Search & Recovery, and various conservation-focused certifications like Reef Check EcoDiver and Coral Reef Conservation.

The centre operates a custom 36-foot aluminium hull dive boat designed to carry 8 passengers and 2 guides. The vessel is powered by biodiesel, reflecting the centre's environmental focus.

On board, you will find a continental breakfast including fresh bagels, fruit, cream cheese, and peanut butter, along with filtered water and cookies. A freshwater cooler is also available on deck for rinsing camera housings. The boat is used for various trip types, including day dives and night dives, covering sites ranging from local reefs to offshore pinnacles.

The shop in Lahaina serves as the hub for training and shore-based activities. For those opting for boat dives, full equipment hire is included in the cost of the trip. This includes the use of dive computers, ensuring you have the necessary tools for managing your profiles.

Standard AL80 cylinders are used, and Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time. The facility is also environmentally conscious, with the shop being 100% solar-powered.

The local waters are home to a diverse array of large marine life. You will regularly encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles, whitetip reef sharks, and spinner dolphins. During the winter months, Humpback whales can also be seen in the area.

On the reefs, look for various endemic Hawaiian reef fish, moray eels, and octopuses. The walls and pinnacles often host larger aggregations of fish and pelagic species, depending on the current and conditions.

For those with an eye for detail, the macro life is significant. You can find a variety of nudibranchs, shrimp, frogfish, scorpionfish, and various crustaceans including lobster. The crevices and reef structures are also frequented by squid and various species of eels.

Diving in this region involves varying conditions depending on the site. The offshore pinnacles can experience moderate to strong currents, which often drive the high concentrations of fish found there. The captain will always select specific sites based on the prevailing conditions to ensure safety.

The boat transit across the channel can occasionally be choppy, though it is generally described as a smooth crossing. Water temperatures typically range between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius.
