Carolina Dive Locker

Located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Carolina Dive Locker serves as a comprehensive hub for the local diving community. As an SSI Diamond Instructor Training Facility, the centre is positioned to provide high-level instruction and technical expertise for divers at every stage of their journey.

The centre offers a unique variety of local diving, ranging from calm freshwater training in nearby lakes to the adventurous, low-visibility environments of the Cooper River. For those looking to travel, they organise structured expeditions to renowned global destinations, including the Belize Barrier Reef and the waters of the Philippines.

The team is comprised of seven experienced instructors, bringing a wealth of diverse expertise to the table. Many members of the staff hold backgrounds in military or commercial diving, ensuring a disciplined and safety-conscious approach to every session.

While the centre is officially affiliated with SSI, the instructors possess extensive experience with PADI and SDI systems as well. This breadth of knowledge allows them to support a wide variety of certification backgrounds and training requirements.

The training catalogue is extensive, covering everything from initial Try Scuba sessions and Open Water Diver certifications to professional-level training. For those looking to refine their skills, they offer specialised courses such as Advanced Adventure, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Navigation.

Technical and specialty training is a core part of their offering, including Enriched Air Nitrox, Dry Suit Diver, and Night Diving and Limited Visibility. They also provide advanced professional pathways, including Assistant Instructor and Instructor programmes, as well as specialised courses in Marine Ecology and Underwater Videography.

The shop is a well-stocked facility providing a full range of equipment sales and repairs. For those who prefer not to carry their own kit, a complete selection of rental equipment is available, including regulators, BCDs, and fins. Wetsuit hire is also provided on-site.

On-site services include cylinder filling and a dedicated Nitrox station. The centre is also known to be spearfishing friendly, stocking products specifically for underwater hunters.

In the local South Carolina waters and freshwater sites, you may encounter freshwater eels in the lakes. The river systems offer the unique opportunity to find fossilised remains, including teeth from Megalodon, Great White sharks, and Mako sharks, alongside ancient shells and vertebrae.

When travelling to the reef destinations organised by the centre, the biodiversity increases significantly. You will find a vibrant array of reef life including moray eels, lobsters, and arrow crabs. The walls and coral gardens are home to a variety of colourful reef creatures.

Larger animals are frequently sighted in the Caribbean and Philippines destinations, such as nurse sharks, reef sharks, turtles, and eagle rays. In certain locations, you may also encounter thresher sharks during the appropriate seasons.

Diving conditions vary significantly depending on the chosen environment. The freshwater lakes provide calm, still conditions with no current, making them highly predictable. In contrast, the Cooper River is a dynamic environment where divers must be comfortable managing moderate currents and low visibility.

The international reef sites typically offer excellent visibility and stable conditions, though divers should always be prepared for the specific characteristics of the site, such as the deep canyons found in the Philippines.
