Tanjung Basi, Perhentian Islands: Reef exploration

Tanjung Basi is situated at the northern end of Perhentian Besar. The dive begins over a reef system that starts around 12 metres, gradually sloping down to a maximum depth of 30 metres. This topography provides varied interfaces for marine life, with the shallower sections often teeming with activity and the deeper areas offering different encounters. The site is characterised by extensive coral slopes, where hard and soft corals create a complex environment for many resident species.

As you descend along the reef, you'll encounter significant rock formations and overhangs that provide shelter and hunting grounds. These geological features add verticality to the dive and create numerous crevices to explore. You'll typically find schooling bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) and fusiliers (Caesionidae) navigating the water column, especially where the current creates a nutrient flow. Turtle sightings are frequent at Tanjung Basi, with both hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and green turtles (Chelonia mydas) moving along the slopes or resting within the reef's sheltered pockets. Beside the larger fauna, the site offers plenty for the macro enthusiast. Look closely for nudibranchs (Nudibranchia) and various shrimp species tucked into the coral structures and under small ledges. These smaller creatures add another layer of discovery for divers keen on detailed observation.

Currents at Tanjung Basi can be variable and strong at times, particularly around the northern tip. Understanding the tide is key to planning your dive here, as it directly influences how you experience the site. When currents are present, they often bring in pelagic life and clear water, but they require careful buoyancy control and awareness of your position relative to the reef. Planning your entry and exit points accordingly will allow for a more relaxed and enjoyable dive.
