You get a proper Funchal base here rather than a sleepy outpost: a long-established five-star resort with open sea views, several places to eat, a spa, pools and the city within walking distance. The Pestana Carlton Madeira has been part of the waterfront since 1976, so it has the feel of a substantial hotel built for people who want facilities on hand, not a boutique address where the exciting feature is the honesty bar.

English and Portuguese are spoken by the hotel team, which keeps the practical conversations straightforward. You can choose between a day built around the Atlantic and a day spent exploring Funchal, then return to a choice of dinner venues, a pool, a massage or a drink without having to organise another expedition.

Couples fit the setting particularly well, especially if you want diving in the itinerary but also want restaurants, town life and somewhere comfortable to sit out the non-diving hours. Families are catered for too, with family rooms, a children’s pool, a children’s menu and indoor play areas.

The hotel stands on the seafront at Largo António Nobre in Funchal, overlooking the Atlantic and the bay. You have direct access to the sea from the property, including stairs from one of the outdoor saltwater pools. This is waterfront access rather than a sandy beach laid out in front of the building, so bring the right mental picture: Atlantic bathing, pools and sea views, not a classic resort beach.

Funchal city centre is about a ten-minute walk away. That puts cafés, bars and the city’s sights within reach when you want to leave the resort under your own steam. Jardim Municipal and the Funchal Museum of Natural History are about 0.8 miles away on foot, while the Madeira Story Centre and Funchal Toy Museum are roughly 1.3 miles away.

For a proper beach outing, Gorgulho–Gavinas Beach is about 1.1 miles away on foot. Formosa Beach is around 2.1 miles away by walking route. Madeira’s International Airport is about 12 miles from the hotel by road, with a drive of roughly 20 minutes.

The useful choice is not simply between one room name and another; it is between a compact twin for two and the extra breathing room of a suite or family category. Twin rooms use two single beds and come with balconies facing the city, bay, sea or pool, depending on the option. If the view matters to you, make that the deciding detail rather than leaving it to chance.

Suites and junior suites give you more room to spread out, with private bathrooms and balcony views that can include the sea, mountains or pool. Family categories use sofa beds alongside twin beds, making them the sensible option when more than two people are sharing. There are also family suites for three or four guests, so you are not forced to turn a standard twin into a small exercise in luggage management.

Air conditioning and heating cover the less glamorous but important part of the holiday: getting comfortable again when you are tired, salty and ready for a shower. Rooms include a minibar, kettle, tea and coffee facilities, a flat-screen television, Wi-Fi, wardrobe space and a balcony. Bathrooms have a bath, bathrobe, slippers, towels and a hairdryer. The beds have also been singled out for comfort, which is exactly the sort of compliment that matters more at seven in the morning than another decorative cushion.

Breakfast is a buffet at Arcos Restaurant from 7.00am, followed by dinner there from 7.00pm to 9.30pm. The cooking covers Madeiran and international dishes, with a show-cooking station at dinner during the seasonal service. You can book breakfast only or half board, depending on how much evening freedom you want outside the hotel.

For a more regional dinner, Taverna Grill works with Madeiran flavours and has its own wine cellar. Its menu includes Madeiran kebab, black scabbard fish, sugar-cane honey and purple passion fruit. Dinner runs from 7.00pm to 10.00pm, with the restaurant closed on Sundays and Mondays, so check the evening plan before walking down expecting a table.

Garden Pool Restaurant & Bar handles the lighter end of the day beside the pool, with Mediterranean and international food, fresh-fruit juices, smoothies and ice cream. Meals run from 11.30am to 5.00pm, with dinner available in summer. The Pub serves lunch and dinner from noon, offering fish and chips, pies and other British and international choices in a rustic interior; it stays open until midnight, with food served until 10.30pm.

There are two bars. Taverna Bar is the indoor cocktail bar, open from 4.30pm to midnight, with meals and snacks until 10.00pm and seasonal live entertainment. Atlântico Pool Bar sits at sea level and serves cold drinks and ice cream from 10.30am to 6.00pm. Dinner-inclusive arrangements do not include drinks, a small detail worth knowing before the first evening bill arrives.

Four pools give you several ways to spend a non-diving afternoon: two large outdoor saltwater pools above the ocean, a separate children’s pool and a heated indoor pool with direct sea views. Sun loungers, umbrellas and pool towels are available. One outdoor pool has steps down to the sea, so you can move from a saltwater swim to the Atlantic without arranging transport or finding a road down to the coast.

Magic SPA is the place for the more deliberate recovery plan. It has a relaxation area, massage rooms, a jacuzzi, sauna, hammam and a heated indoor pool, alongside the fitness centre. Treatments include Rebalance, Relaxation, Without Stress and sports massage, with physical treatments and physiotherapist support available. A couples massage is also available when both of you have had enough of pretending that a sun lounger counts as physiotherapy.

When you still have energy, the hotel has mini golf, a games room, billiards, table tennis and darts, as well as a library and reading room. Bicycle hire, cultural excursions and regional tours are available, while nearby activities include paragliding, yacht excursions, windsurfing, hiking, canoeing and fishing. The Taverna Bar also hosts seasonal live entertainment and live music.

Check-in starts at 3.00pm and check-out runs until noon. The front desk is open around the clock, and you need photo identification and a credit card at check-in. Children of any age are welcome; cots for children up to two years old can be requested, while extra beds are not available. The minimum age for check-in is 18.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Private parking is available on site, with street parking also listed, and car hire can be arranged through the hotel. A lift, wheelchair-accessible facilities and direct sea access make the layout easier to manage, although the sea entry itself is via the waterfront access rather than a sandy beach. A tour desk and concierge service are available for arranging time away from the property.

The nearest airport is Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport, about 12 miles away by road. Allow roughly 20 minutes by car in normal conditions. Airport transfers are not listed as a hotel service, so arrange your own transport to Funchal. Pets are accepted on request, with availability and admission rules to settle before arrival.
