The Inn on Loch Lomond

First opened in 1814, The Inn on Loch Lomond keeps the shape of a traditional Scottish inn while giving you modern rooms and a contemporary bar and restaurant. The setting does much of the talking: you are on the loch shore, with views towards Ben Lomond and the mountains and woodland of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park around you.

This is a practical base for a couple, a family or anyone who wants Scottish scenery without giving up a proper evening meal and a decent drink. You can eat in the main building, walk down towards the water, and return to a bar with more than 50 malt whiskies, Scottish gins, real ales and live music on Friday and Saturday evenings.

English is the language spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal directly with staff throughout your stay. The atmosphere is casual rather than ceremonial: leather and cowhide furnishings, hand-finished elm, an oak mantelpiece and the sort of bar where outdoor clothes do not need to apologise for themselves.

You stay at Inverbeg, in Luss, Scotland, on the main A82 and around 3 miles north of the village of Luss. Loch Lomond is right outside the property, with access to the shore and a walk of less than five minutes from the main building. The separate Beach House sits directly on the banks of the loch and has eight bedrooms for guests looking for more privacy and space.

The address puts you inside the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park area, with the loch, mountains and rugged woodland as your immediate surroundings. Argyll Forest Park is around 5 miles away by road, while the entrance to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park is around 7 miles away.

Luss is close enough for a short drive rather than a long expedition. Glasgow Airport is around 27 miles away, roughly 30 to 35 minutes by car, and Glasgow city centre is around 29 miles away. The nearest listed railway station is Arrochar and Tarbet, around 5 miles away by road.

You can choose between rooms in the main building and the lochside Beach House. The main inn suits you if you want the restaurant and bar close at hand, while the Beach House gives you more privacy, quiet and space beside the water. That distinction matters more here than a long catalogue of room names.

For two people, the choice is mainly about how you want the room to work. A Snug Guest Room is the compact option for a couple who plan to spend their waking hours out walking, on the loch or in the bar. The Deluxe rooms give you more room around a super-king or king-size bed, and selected Deluxe Loch View rooms have accessible wet rooms. Ground-floor Deluxe rooms also have large modern walk-in wet rooms designed for disabled access.

Every room has a modern private bathroom and locally made materials and furniture bring some of the area indoors. Heating is available for cooler Scottish nights, Wi-Fi runs throughout the hotel, and 24-hour room service gives you a fallback when you would rather eat privately than negotiate the bar after a full day outside. The Inn Bar & Restaurant handles breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an all-day menu from midday until 9pm. The menu changes with the catch, which is more useful than a grand promise about seasonality when you are deciding what to eat.

You will find straightforward Scottish favourites alongside vegetarian and vegan choices: fish and chips with house-made tartare sauce, macaroni cheese, haggis, burgers and steaks from the grill. Desserts include sticky toffee pudding and the distinctly unsubtle deep-fried Mars Bar with ice cream. Breakfast is à la carte, with continental, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and buffet options also available, as well as breakfast to go.

There is one named bar, The Inn Bar, built around a hand-finished elm counter and an oak mantelpiece. Its drinks list covers more than 50 single malt whiskies from Scotland’s main whisky regions, plus Scottish gins, cocktails, wines by the glass and real ales. Friday and Saturday evenings bring solo artists playing Scottish music, folk and familiar hits; Sunday sessions are also part of the programme. Room service runs around the clock, and takeaway food and packed lunches are available.

The loch is the main outdoor playground, and you can arrange kayaking, sailing, jet skiing, fishing, boat cruises, wakeboarding and water skiing nearby. Cruising is the slower option when your legs have had enough of being useful. The hotel can also help arrange activities around the loch, so you have a base for more than simply admiring the view from a chair.

On land, you can take walking tours, bike tours, hiking trails, e-bike hire, golf, horse riding and cultural excursions. You reach the inn from Glasgow Airport by taking the M8 towards Greenock, crossing the Erskine Bridge and joining the A82 north towards Dumbarton, Alexandria and Crianlarich. Continue past Luss; the inn is at Inverbeg on the left. Glasgow Airport is the straightforward arrival point, around 27 miles away and approximately 30 to 35 minutes by car. Car hire is available, and free private parking is on site, including accessible parking.

Check-in runs from 3pm to 11pm, with reception open from 7am to 11pm and a night porter available overnight. Check-out is by 11am.
