This is a three-star hotel for a stay built around scenery, hearty food and access to the outdoors rather than a long list of resort facilities. The Village Inn sits beside Loch Long, with some rooms looking across the water and the Arrochar Alps rising behind it.

You can keep the evening simple here: a private room, a drink by the fire, a meal based on seasonal local produce, then a short wander outside if the light holds. The shared lounge and TV area give you another place to sit, while free WiFi covers the hotel when you need to check the next day's plans.

Arrochar and Tarbet railway station is about 1.4 miles away by road, roughly a two-minute drive. The immediate area is better suited to walks and trails than to collecting cafés on foot, although several places to eat sit around 0.7 miles away in Arrochar, including Arrochar Fish & Chips, The Arrochar Tea Room and The Rendevous.

Glasgow Airport is about 25 miles away, with the journey taking around 40 minutes by car. Oban Airport is about 30 miles away, with a longer drive of roughly one hour and eleven minutes.

The rooms are en suite and keep the useful basics close at hand: tea and coffee facilities, an electric kettle, a coffee machine, a flat-screen TV, a wardrobe and a seating area. A private bathroom with towels, toiletries and a hairdryer means you can get clean, dry and horizontal without negotiating a shared corridor.

For two, the Superior Double Room is the more generous choice, with a king-size bed. The Standard Double Room keeps things more compact, while the Standard Triple Room gives three people separate sleeping arrangements with a single bed and a double bed. There is also a Cottage Double with the same single-and-double-bed arrangement, which may suit a small group better than a conventional double.

Some rooms overlook Loch Long, so room choice affects more than the bed. Heating is available for cooler evenings, and the hotel is non-smoking throughout. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, a detail worth keeping in mind if you prefer to avoid luggage being carried up after a long travel day.

The restaurant works with seasonal, locally sourced produce and serves seafood, which gives dinner a clear sense of place without dressing it up as a culinary expedition. Special-diet menus are available on request, and children's meals are part of the family offering.

Breakfast covers continental, full English or Irish, vegetarian, vegan and buffet options. That is a useful spread when one person wants toast and coffee while another regards breakfast as a serious hot meal requiring structural support.

There is one bar, with refreshing drinks and afternoon tea served beside two log fires. When the weather allows, the beer garden overlooks Loch Long, with outdoor furniture, a terrace and a sun terrace for taking the drink outside.

The main activity begins beyond the front door. Walks and trails run through the local area and stop in nearby villages, while Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and Argyll Forest Park put proper countryside close to the hotel. You can make the day as energetic or as undemanding as your legs allow.

Back at the property, the garden, terrace and sun terrace give you space to sit outside when the Scottish sky is behaving. For a quieter evening, use the shared lounge and TV area, or simply claim a chair near the fires and let the day wind down without another timetable.

The hotel also allows pets in the bar area, so a walking holiday can include the dog without turning the evening into a logistical exercise.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 22:00, and check-out from 07:00 to 11:00. The minimum age for check-in is 18, and cash is accepted for payment.

Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed, which is useful in this part of the country where having your own car makes reaching the surrounding lochs, forests and trailheads much easier. WiFi is free throughout the hotel, including the rooms.
