Turtle Caye - Brendal's Dive Center

Located on the picturesque Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos, Bahamas, Brendal's Dive Center has been a cornerstone of the local diving community since 1985. This full-service dive centre and retail shop is operated by Brendal and Mary, offering a professional gateway to the diverse marine ecosystems of the archipelago.

The centre is uniquely positioned for those seeking both structured training and adventure, ranging from introductory dives to advanced technical specialities. Whether you are looking to explore shallow coral gardens or deeper reef structures, the operation is built on decades of local knowledge and a deep respect for the Bahamian environment.

The centre is led by Brendal, a Platinum Pro instructor who has trained more than 5,000 students throughout his career. This level of experience ensures that instruction is handled with a high degree of precision, whether you are completing your first Open Water Diver course or working towards a Divemaster certification.

Operating as both a PADI and SSI affiliated centre, the team provides a wide breadth of training and expertise. The centre is also a Universal Referral Location, making it a convenient stop for divers transitioning between different training agencies or moving through their certification progression.

The training programme covers the entire spectrum of scuba diving through PADI and SSI certifications. Beginners can start with Introduction to Scuba Diving or the Open Water Diver course, while those looking to advance can pursue Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, or Wreck Diver certifications.

For professional aspirants, the centre offers Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and various specialty courses such as Buoyancy Control, Navigation, and Night Diver. The curriculum also includes essential safety training like Medic First Aid & CPR and the Stress & Rescue course.

The fleet includes several custom vessels tailored to different group sizes and dive styles. You can expect to see 36-foot custom tour vessels, 34-foot custom dive vessels, and smaller 29-foot boats designed for more intimate groups. For those preferring a different pace, a 29-foot sailing vessel is also available.

On board, the boats are equipped to make your time on the water comfortable, featuring shade, toilets, and large coolers. For longer excursions, the centre provides water, ice, local drinks, and fruit punch to keep you refreshed between dives.

The centre operates as a full-service dive shop and retail outlet. For those travelling light, a complete range of rental kit is available, including masks, snorkels, fins, and wetsuits.

Beyond scuba equipment, the centre also manages a variety of water sports and local transport needs, offering rentals for kayaks, paddleboards, and golf carts to help you navigate the island.

The reefs around Green Turtle Cay are teeming with life, from shallow coral gardens to deeper walls. You will frequently encounter various tropical reef fish, silversides, and schooling tropical fish. The walls and ledges are often patrolled by large groupers and Nassau groupers, while Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi) and rays (Batoidea) add to the pelagic presence.

In the sandy channels and reef flats, look out for sea turtles (Cheloniidae), green moray (Gymnothorax funebris), and various species of snapper and jack (Carangidae). You may also spot eagle rays (Aetobatus) cruising the currents.

The marine scenery is defined by a rich variety of fixed life, including fan corals, Gorgonian (Gorgonacea), and various species of sponge (Porifera), such as tube sponges and barrel sponges. These structures provide the essential habitat for the local ecosystem.

Seasonal visitors include Bahamas lobster from August to March, while fresh conch can be found from April to July.

The area offers year-round diving opportunities with water temperatures ranging between 24°C and 31°C. Visibility is consistently high, typically recorded at 30 metres.
