El Almirante about the site
Dropping into El Almirante, you immediately encounter a dramatic coral wall that forms the backbone of this dive. The descent reveals a vibrant tapestry of marine life, with large sponges and sea fans clinging to the rock face, creating a complex and colourful environment. The wall itself drops continuously, allowing for a sustained journey alongside its features, providing ample opportunity to observe the intricate details of its ecosystem.
As you follow the wall down, the spectacle shifts from the shallower corals to the profound beauty of deeper growth. Immense blooms of black coral begin to appear, starting from just over 30 metres (100 feet) and extending downwards for another 6 metres (20 feet). These ancient colonies form dense, intricate structures that provide shelter and hunting grounds for smaller reef inhabitants, offering a stark contrast against the deep blue backdrop of the open water.
The inherent architecture of El Almirante's wall ensures that your gaze can either be fixed on the microscopic wonders nestled within the corals or cast outwards into the expansive blue.
