Habitation Diamant is a five-apartment villa in the Martinique countryside, set among a tropical garden of flowers and fruit. You get the privacy of your own apartment, a private entrance and your own spa, with a heated saltwater pool shared by the guests when you fancy a change of scene.

The setup suits divers who prefer an apartment to a hotel room: make coffee when you like, keep food and drinks in the fridge, and settle into your own space rather than negotiating a breakfast timetable. The team speaks French, so a little French will make daily exchanges easier.

Families and groups have room to spread out, with some apartments able to connect. For a couple, the one-bedroom layout keeps things simple; for a larger group, the multi-bedroom apartments provide a more workable base than several separate rooms.

The address sits in the Morne Blanc district of Le Diamant, between the town of Le Diamant and the beaches around Anses d'Arlet. You are in the countryside, with a tropical garden around you, while the coast is reached by car rather than by a stroll in flip-flops.

Grande Anse du Diamant Beach is about 2.6 miles away by car, and the beaches around Anses d'Arlet are roughly 3.6 to 3.9 miles away. The drive takes around eight to ten minutes to the nearby beaches. Petite Anse, Plage de la Cherry and Grande Anse d'Arlet are also within reach.

Le Diamant and Anses d'Arlet are around five to ten minutes away by car. Restaurants include Joz le Gourmet at about 1.3 miles, Restaurant la Piscine at around 2 miles and Beach Blue Rock at roughly 2.3 miles. Roches Genty is about 4.6 miles away, while Morne Larcher is around 2.9 miles away for a change from the usual poolside view.

These are proper apartments rather than rooms with a kettle pretending to be a kitchen. You have a fully equipped kitchen with a hob, oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, coffee machine, toaster, kettle and kitchenware, plus a washing machine. That matters when you come back hungry, damp and carrying the remains of the day in a bag.

Couples can keep to the one-bedroom apartment, while the two-bedroom layouts work for four or five guests depending on the apartment. The three-bedroom apartment is the sensible choice for a group of up to eight, with four bathrooms and enough separation to avoid turning the evening into a queue for the shower. Some apartments can connect for larger families or groups.

Air conditioning helps take the edge off Martinique's heat, and soundproof rooms make the night easier when you want sleep rather than a soundtrack. Private entrances, terraces, outdoor dining areas and drying racks keep everyday life straightforward. Each apartment also has a private spa with water at 34°C, renewed for each new guest.

The formula is self-catering, so your kitchen is the main table. There is no fixed breakfast routine to catch and no dining room timetable to organise your day around: coffee, toast and something cold from the fridge are entirely in your hands.

The kitchens are equipped for more than reheating leftovers, with an oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher and outdoor dining area. After a morning in the water, that gives you the useful option of eating immediately, eating late or simply assembling a plate without leaving the apartment.

Evening meals can be delivered to the Diamant apartment for groups or arranged as a made-to-order service. The garden and terraces add somewhere to eat outside, while nearby restaurants provide alternatives in Le Diamant and around Anses d'Arlet.

The heated outdoor saltwater pool sits in a fenced tropical garden, with sun loungers placed among the flowers and fruit trees. It is open to all guests, but the private spa attached to each apartment gives you a more solitary way to warm up and unwind. An open-air bath and hot tub are also part of the wellness offering.

A massage therapist can come to your apartment by arrangement, which is a useful option when your legs have had enough of both fins and sightseeing. The spa space is private to each apartment, and the water is renewed for every new guest. No ceremony required: soak, recover, repeat.

For land-based days, the property is well placed for hiking and excursions. Suggested outings include Montagne Pelée, the Rocher du Diamant, the Jardins de Balata, Fort Saint-Louis, local markets, the Route de la Trace, Habitation Céron, the Savane des Pétrifications and the beaches of Les Salines, Cap Macré and Anse Dufour. Boat excursions and the summer Tour de Yole are also part of the local programme.

Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport is about 17 miles away by road, with a drive of roughly half an hour. Private, enclosed parking is available on site, which is useful if you are hiring a car for the beaches, restaurants and excursions spread around the south-west of the island.

Check-in starts at 16:00 and runs until 23:00; share your expected arrival time with the property. Check-out is at 10:30. The apartments have free WiFi, air conditioning, private bathrooms, flat-screen television and laundry facilities, while bed linen and towels are included.

Children of any age are welcome, and cots are available depending on the accommodation selected. Smoking is allowed in the garden and on terraces, but not inside the apartments. Parties are not permitted, and pets are not accepted. All apartments require a minimum stay of seven nights.

The tropical garden provides fruit for guests when the season allows, rather than treating every plant as decoration that must be imported and displayed. It is a small, tangible part of the stay: look around before reaching for the supermarket bag.
