Hotel Gerard et Francine is a small guesthouse-style address on the Ambatoloaka waterfront, built around a family atmosphere rather than a large-resort routine. English and French are spoken by the hotel team, so you can discuss arrivals, excursions and the practicalities of your stay without resorting to underwater sign language.

The setting has a distinctly Malagasy feel, with traditionally built rooms, wooden details, tropical planting and open views towards the sea. Macaco lemurs, hummingbirds and chameleons move freely through the garden. It is a good fit if you prefer a personal base beside the beach, with the village close enough for a change of scene and the sea always part of the view.

The hotel dates back to 1988 and keeps its focus on simple comforts: a terrace, a bar for guests, a natural pool by the beach and somewhere to sit with the day’s salt still drying on your skin. Nothing here suggests a convention centre in disguise.

You are in Ambatoloaka, Madagascar, directly on the long white-sand Ambatoloaka Beach, with the lagoon in front and the green slopes of the Crater behind. The beach is roughly 0.1 miles away, close enough that your route from room to sea need not involve footwear of any serious description. Madirokely Beach is about 0.3 miles away.

Ambatoloaka village is nearby and provides the useful change of scenery that comes with a lively local base. Batumoch is around 0.1 miles away, while Restaurant la Plantation is about 4.2 miles away. For a day away from the coast, Mount Passot is about 5 miles from the hotel and Lokobe Reserve about 7 miles away.

Fascene Airport is around 8 miles away. The hotel also has an airport shuttle, which can be arranged for your arrival or departure.

The room choice is pleasantly straightforward. Couples can take the Double Room with Sea View, with its large bed and the prospect of waking to the coast; two friends or a pair of divers who prefer their own sleeping space can look at the Twin Room with Sea View. The twin option gives you separate beds without turning the room into a dormitory exercise.

Every room has a terrace, while some also have a balcony. You get a private bathroom with a shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer, along with a wardrobe, minibar and safe. A mosquito net, fan and high ceilings suit the tropical setting, while soundproofing and a private entrance add a little separation from the rest of the property.

The rooms follow the local architecture, with traditional Malagasy and Nosy Be influences, wooden floors and créole-style construction. There is no television competing with the evening, but there is free WiFi throughout the hotel. Room service is available, useful when your legs have had enough of the day and dinner requires more ambition than opening the minibar.

Breakfast comes as a buffet and is properly geared towards getting you out of bed: coffee or tea, fresh fruit juice, homemade pastry, fruit and eggs cooked as an omelette or fried eggs. You can take it with a view of the beach, which is a more convincing breakfast companion than a wall-mounted screen.

There is one bar, the guesthouse lounge bar, reserved for hotel guests and set up for conversation rather than a nightclub audition. Its speciality is the Caïpirana, a Malagasy-style cocktail that gives the evening a local accent without requiring a guided tour of every bar in Ambatoloaka.

Meals are prepared to order, with room service and food service available before 17:00. That timing matters: if you expect a late dinner after a long day out, plan accordingly rather than relying on culinary rescue at midnight.

The natural pool sits directly on the beach, beside the sea rather than in the middle of a paved resort complex. Sun loungers, umbrellas and a solarium give you somewhere to dry off, read or simply stare at the horizon while your shoulders remember the morning. Massages are available on beach beds placed on the solarium, with Malagasy treatments delivered beside the water.

The tropical garden is part of the entertainment here, particularly if you enjoy wildlife that does not require a boat trip. Macaco lemurs, lizards, chameleons, frogs and birds can be observed among the planting. There is also a picnic area, outdoor furniture and a family-friendly atmosphere, with board games for slower afternoons.

When a little more movement is called for, the hotel arranges excursions towards Nosy Komba, Tanikely, Sakatia, Iranja, Fanihy and Lokobe. You can also choose island tours by car or quad, marine wildlife outings, fishing, snorkelling and visits connected with local nature and culture. The useful part is the range: one day can involve a reserve, the next a beach, and another absolutely nothing beyond a lounger.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 23:30 and check-out from 07:30 to 12:30. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the hotel asks you to share your expected arrival time. Payment at the property is cash only, so organise that before you arrive rather than discovering it when the bags are already in the room.

Airport transfers are available through the hotel. Private parking is available on site, although spaces are limited. Luggage storage, currency exchange, private or express check-in and check-out, daily housekeeping and laundry are also available. WiFi is free throughout the hotel.

Children of all ages are welcome. Cots and extra beds can be requested, subject to the room selected and availability. Pets are allowed without an additional charge, while parties and similar events are not permitted. The entire unit is on the ground floor, which keeps the logistics simple when you are carrying more luggage than any sensible person should take on a tropical holiday.

The hotel’s environmental work is practical rather than decorative. Solar energy supports the property, hot water is solar-heated and low-consumption light bulbs are used throughout. The natural pool uses seawater rather than an artificial pool system, keeping water consumption in the conversation where it belongs.

Since 1995, the hotel has been involved in waste treatment and training in the surrounding villages. It created the Tanana Madio association, meaning “Clean Village”, to support waste sorting and transfer, rainwater-channel management and the provision of public toilets in Ambatoloaka, Madirokely and Dar es-Salam.

The approach also runs through the way the rooms are built, using local materials and natural ventilation with fans. The hotel explicitly rejects sex tourism and presents its work as part of Nosy Be’s move towards more sustainable tourism.
