SALT of Palmar is an adult-only boutique hotel for travellers who like their beach stay with a bit of character: local food, thoughtful design and a proper connection with Mauritius rather than a sealed-off resort bubble. It is a member of Design Hotels, but the useful part for you is what that means on the ground: rooms with local touches, a strong food identity and plenty to do without arranging your entire life around an animation timetable.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside French, German, Russian and Chinese. That matters when you have just come back from the water, want a straight answer about dinner or need help organising the next day. The atmosphere is aimed at adults, couples and independent travellers who would rather trade a television for a balcony, a good book or the sound of the sea.

You are on the Coastal Road at Palmar, in Belle Mare, on the east coast of Mauritius. The hotel sits directly beside a white-sand beach, with the sea approximately 20 metres from the doors. Palmar Beach is effectively on the doorstep; Belle Mare Beach is about 0.7 miles away, while Quatre Cocos Beach is roughly 2.3 miles along the coast.

This is a coastal base rather than a town-centre address. You can reach restaurants such as Flamboyant, Cotomili and Varangue in the nearby Belle Mare area, all around 200 feet away by road, while bars including Icery 1869 Bar and K-Bar are within about 0.7 miles. For a change from the shoreline, Ilot Lievres and Ilot Levrettes are around 3.3 and 3.1 miles away, and GRSE Waterfall is about 8 miles from the hotel.

The rooms are designed for two, which keeps the arrangement pleasingly simple for couples travelling together. If the first thing you want to see in the morning is the Indian Ocean, choose a sea-facing option; if stepping straight onto the sand matters more than having the broadest room, the beach-facing categories are the ones to examine. The Pool Plus Room uses twin beds, a practical detail if you prefer separate sleeping arrangements.

Expect a handmade Carpe Diem super-king bed in the relevant room categories, 100% organic cotton bedding, a rainfall shower and a private bathroom with natural locally made toiletries. Air conditioning deals with the hot, salt-heavy end of the day, while the balcony gives you somewhere to sit without having to dress for public view. There is also a yoga mat and block in each room, a Roberts radio and free WiFi throughout the property.

There is no television in the rooms. That is either a welcome escape from background noise or a detail worth knowing before you book, depending on whether your ideal evening involves a film or an early night with the doors open to the coastal air. Daily housekeeping, bathrobes, slippers, a hairdryer and room service make the practical side of the stay straightforward.

The Good Kitchen carries the main dining load, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with food that moves between Mauritian roots and international cooking. The kitchen works with fresh, local, raw, vegan and vegetarian ingredients, alongside more indulgent dishes, so you can eat lightly when the body is still negotiating with the sea or make a proper recovery meal of it. Halal breakfast is available, and special-diet menus can be arranged.

SALT Bakery handles breakfast with bread and pastries straight from the oven, plus locally roasted coffee from the barista between 7am and 10.30am. Tek Tek sits by the beach in the open air, with the chef cooking in front of you and no walls getting in the way of the sea breeze. Dinner calls for smart casual dress; breakfast and lunch are more forgiving, with swimwear covered by something more substantial than optimism.

There are two bars. The Rooftop Bar looks over the ocean and concentrates on signature cocktails and gin, while The Pool Bar serves local craft beers and cocktails inspired by Mauritius. For a quieter arrival back from the day's diving, the rooftop is the obvious place to sit with a drink and let the kit, the boat and the alarm clock become tomorrow's problem.

The beach is directly accessible, with outdoor furniture, sun terraces, beach chairs and towels available for the essential post-dive business of lying still. There is also the hotel pool area, plus a fitness centre, fitness classes, yoga and meditation. A meditation app is available, and the rooms include the equipment for a private yoga session when joining a class feels like one organised activity too many.

SALT Equilibrium is the more deliberate route to recovery. The spa offers massages, facials, foot treatments, body treatments and a Himalayan pink salt room, as well as a relaxation area and spa packages. Couples can book a couples massage; anyone whose shoulders have spent the day carrying a cylinder can opt for back, neck, head or full-body work instead.

When you want to leave the lounger, the programme includes canoeing, snorkelling, on-site water sports, cycling, walking tours and horse riding. You can also take part in cooking classes, local-culture sessions, bike tours, themed dinners, live music, movie nights and evening entertainment. The hotel’s wider experiences include Le Morne, sugar-cane fields and the Indian heritage of the island, while Skill Swap and Community Games add something more social without requiring a competitive spirit.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport is about 26 miles away by road, with the journey taking around 42 minutes by car. An airport shuttle is available and can be arranged with the hotel; car hire is also available. If you are driving, private parking is available on site, and you can use it without reserving a space.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 10pm, and the hotel asks you to arrange your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is by noon. A 24-hour front desk, concierge service, currency exchange, private and express check-in or check-out, luggage-friendly packed lunches and room service cover the useful edges of a diving holiday, particularly when travel plans do not line up neatly with mealtimes.

The property is adults-only: children are not allowed, and cots or extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed either. Cash is not accepted, so plan to pay by card. Free private parking and free WiFi are available, with wheelchair-accessible facilities on site.

The hotel builds its food around local and seasonal ingredients, working with farmers, fishermen and growers from Mauritius. That gives the kitchen a direct connection with the island and keeps the plate tied to the place rather than to a generic international menu.
