Canyon, Rab, Croatia: Exploring underwater tunnels and caves

The Canyon dive site, found on the northern side of Grgur island, or near Cape Verudela depending on the approach, starts with a distinctive shallow section. Initially, you'll find depths between 3 and 7 metres, where the canyon walls themselves rise up to 20 metres above the surface. This entry point provides a unique perspective, allowing for a gradual immersion into the site's geological features from the very beginning of the dive.

Transitioning from the initial shallow canyon, the dive leads you through a series of natural tunnels at approximately 5 metres. These tunnels serve as a direct path, guiding you further into the site's structure. Emerging from these passages, the terrain drops abruptly, forming a wall that descends to its maximum reported depth. This architectural shift in the underwater landscape defines the progression of the dive.

As you follow the main wall section, the topography becomes more intricate, characterised by numerous geological formations. Along this descent, between 16 and 19 metres, there are two distinct, larger caves that invite exploration. Beyond these primary features, the wall is honeycombed with a multitude of smaller holes and additional grottos, each providing shelter and interest for macro life, allowing for detailed observation.

The overall depth profile at Canyon ranges from a minimum of 3 metres down to 28 metres, accommodating a broad spectrum of diving preferences and experience levels. The dive can be tailored to spend time in the shallower, well-lit canyon and tunnel systems, or to explore the deeper wall and cave formations. This versatility ensures that regardless of your preferred depth, there are clear geological features to navigate and investigate.

Visibility at Canyon, consistent with the regional conditions for Croatia, is generally good, enhancing the experience of exploring the intricate walls and cave systems. The clear water allows for unobstructed views through the tunnels and inside the caverns, illuminating the rock formations and any resident marine life. This clarity is a key factor in appreciating the scale and detail of the site's unique underwater landscape.
