Set inside a historic building in Livorno, Agave in Città combines period character with the practical comforts that matter when you are travelling with wet hair, tired legs and a dinner decision still to make. The feel is more city stay than beach hotel, with the port, old streets and local restaurants doing much of the work outside your front door.

You can keep things simple here. Air conditioning, free WiFi, room service, a bar, a snack bar and a coffee house cover the basics, while the infinity pool, indoor pool and sauna give you somewhere to slow down when the day's sightseeing or diving plans are over. The accommodation ranges from compact studios for two to substantial apartments for four, so the sensible choice depends on whether you want a base for sleeping or somewhere to spread out properly. The Duplex Studio and Studio are the straightforward couple's options, each with a king-size bed. For more room, the Superior Apartment offers two bathrooms and enough space for a group of four without turning every suitcase into a piece of furniture.

The apartments are the practical call when you want to handle breakfast, snacks or a simple supper at your own pace. Kitchenettes come with a dining table, refrigerator, stovetop, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine, kettle and kitchenware; some also have a tumble dryer. That is useful after a long day out, particularly when eating in means not having to put respectable clothes back on.
