Hotel Navy

Nine rooms, an old villa, and a garden where you can sit with a drink or a snack: Hotel Navy is a small, straightforward address rather than a sprawling resort. It stands opposite Livorno’s Naval Academy, with an intimate feel that suits you if you prefer a manageable base to a hotel that requires a map and a compass to find your room.

The setting gives the place some character without asking you to make a ceremony of it. Hardwood or parquet floors, air conditioning, soundproofing and free Wi-Fi cover the practical side of the stay, while the garden gives you somewhere to slow down when the day is done. Room service, a bar and a snack bar mean you can keep things simple when your legs have had enough of both diving and sightseeing.

You are in Livorno, Italy, on Viale Italia and directly opposite the Naval Academy. The Tyrrhenian Sea is close: beaches are about 0.1 miles away, while Scogli dell’Accademia Beach is roughly 0.5 miles from the hotel. Spiaggia del Felciaio is about 0.9 miles away, with Rotonda Beach around 1.2 miles and Tre Ponti Beach around 1.5 miles.

This is a coastal city location, not an isolated resort setting. Restaurants such as Beni. B, Gioia Ristorante and Sestante are within roughly 0.1 to 0.2 miles, and Inveni, a café, is about 0.1 miles away. Livorno’s botanical gardens are a 15-minute walk from the hotel, while Villa Fabbricotti is about 1.1 miles away on foot. The main port is around five minutes away by car, useful if your route begins or ends on a ferry rather than under the surface.

For two, the Double Room is the obvious choice: one large king-size bed, a private bathroom and enough of the usual practical kit to make the room work as a base rather than merely a place to leave your suitcase. The air conditioning matters when the day has involved heat, salt and a wetsuit. Soundproofing should also appeal if you value a proper night’s sleep more than a hotel full of late-night noise.

If you are travelling as a small group or family, the larger room layouts are more useful than simply adding another bed. The Triple Room combines a king-size bed with a single bed, while the Quadruple Room adds two single beds to the king-size bed. There are family rooms, but no extra beds; cots can be requested for infants aged up to one year. Children of any age are welcome.

A minibar and electric kettle are handy when you want cold water or a hot drink without heading straight back out. You also have a desk, wardrobe, flat-screen television, telephone, hairdryer and private bathroom with shower or bath, toilet, bidet and toiletries. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, so you can check the next day’s plans without having to conduct the operation from the garden.

Breakfast changes with the season. During the summer months, you can have a sweet and savoury spread with cold meats, cheese and croissants. In winter, the sweet breakfast comes to your room, which is a sensible arrangement for anyone who would rather start slowly than join the morning parade before the first coffee.

Half board is available through a restaurant working with the hotel, so dinner can be arranged as part of your stay without turning the hotel itself into a full-scale dining operation. That gives you several ways to deal with the familiar post-dive question: proper meal, small bite, or simply something cold while you sit down for five minutes and accidentally stay there for an hour.

The garden is the main place to unwind on the property. You can take a drink or snack outside, settle into a quieter corner and let the day become less demanding. There is no need to invent an activity when sitting down is already doing the job properly.

When you want to leave the hotel, Livorno gives you a few easy options close by. The botanical gardens are a 15-minute walk away, and Villa Fabbricotti is about 1.1 miles on foot. Several beaches lie along the coast within roughly 0.5 to 1.5 miles, so a non-diving companion can make a beach day of it while you recover, or you can both head out for a coastal wander before dinner.

For a little more city, the historic centre and landmarks around Darsena Vecchia, the Monumento I Quattro Mori and Palazzo del Governo are within about 1.5 to 1.8 miles. It is enough territory for an afternoon without requiring an expedition. Back at the hotel, the bar and garden remain available for the less ambitious version of the evening.

Pisa International Airport is about 12 miles from the hotel by road, while Florence Airport is around 58 miles away. Livorno Centrale railway station is roughly 2.9 miles away, and Ardenza station is about 1.8 miles away. If you arrive by car, nearby public street parking is available without reservation. The hotel also has luggage storage, daily housekeeping, a wake-up service and a safety deposit box.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 21:00, with reception open until 22:00. If you expect to arrive after that, contact the hotel in advance. Check-out is from 08:00 to 10:00. For an early departure before 07:30, a breakfast basket can be prepared the night before, which is the sort of small practical detail that earns its keep on travel days.

There is no lift, so your choice of room may matter if stairs are a concern. The hotel has facilities for disabled guests, including an emergency cord in the bathroom. Rooms are non-smoking, pets are not allowed, and cash is accepted for payment. Bed linen and towels are included for every guest.
