You get an aparthotel rather than a conventional bedroom, with a kitchen, seating area and private bathroom — useful when your timetable involves early starts, wet towels and the occasional meal that does not need a restaurant involved.

Lift access makes the building easier to navigate, while the fitness centre gives you somewhere to stretch the legs when the sea has not quite taken care of that job. You are in Trieste, on Via della Tesa, in a quieter area with the city's main sights within reach on foot or by public transport. Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia is about 1 mile away, while San Giusto Castle is roughly 1.25 miles from the residence. The Old Stock Exchange Building and Trieste Roman Theatre are also within about 1 mile.

This is a city base, not a waterside hotel. Lanterna Beach is around 1.6 miles away, and Trieste railway station is about 1.4 miles from the property. For a stroll with a bit of history attached, the Roman Theatre, Arco di Riccardo and Piazza della Borsa put you firmly in Trieste rather than in an anonymous resort district.

You can also reach Miramare Castle, around 5 miles away, and the Carso Triestino e Goriziano, roughly 5 miles from the residence. The local geography gives you two different sorts of non-diving day: urban wandering close by, or a short trip towards the Karst landscape.

The apartments are the reason to choose this address over a conventional city hotel. Kitchens come with an oven, refrigerator and hob, so you can keep drinks cold, prepare something simple after a long day and avoid treating every meal as a logistical exercise. A seating area with a TV carrying Sky and international channels gives you somewhere to land once the kit is put away.

For a couple, the Penthouse Apartment is the more compact option, while the one- and two-bedroom layouts make more sense if you want separate sleeping space or are travelling with family. The larger two-bedroom apartments accommodate up to five people; the one-bedroom options cover smaller groups of up to three or four. Each apartment has one private bathroom with either a bath or shower and a hairdryer.

Daily housekeeping keeps the arrangement closer to a hotel than a rented flat. Ironing facilities and a washing machine are useful touches for a longer stay, particularly when a week of salt, sun and repeated kit changes starts to defeat the suitcase. The apartments are heated, reached by lift and include free Wi-Fi in private rooms and common areas.

Breakfast is available in a continental, Italian, gluten-free and buffet format. You can book it rather than building the morning around a supermarket raid, which matters when the day's first appointment is somewhere near the water and not at lunchtime.

The residence does not centre the stay around an in-house restaurant or bar. Instead, the apartment kitchen gives you the option of sorting out a quick breakfast, a packed lunch or something uncomplicated when you return hungry and not especially keen on making conversation with a waiter.

For meals out, the surrounding streets keep the job simple. Buffet al Rebechin and Braceria Mangal are both roughly 300 feet away, while Gelateria Bar Arnoldo is around 450 feet from the property. Evolution and Bar Company are within about 1,000 feet, and Baldon Antica Trattoria is around 0.5 miles away. In other words, you can eat locally without turning dinner into another expedition.

The fitness centre is the main on-site option when you want to move without committing to a full sightseeing programme. It is there for a modest session, a bit of stretching or the useful ritual of convincing your legs that stairs still have a purpose.

For a slower afternoon, Giardino Storico Basevi is about 0.7 miles away. The historic centre is close enough to turn a coffee into a walk past the Roman Theatre, San Giusto Castle and the old buildings around Piazza della Borsa. That gives you something to do between dives without filling the day with organised activities.

If the sea is calling but the dive plan is not, Lanterna Beach is about 1.6 miles away. Miramare Castle, around 5 miles from the residence, makes a stronger half-day outing, while the nearby cafés, bars and gelateria provide the less ambitious alternative. Some days need culture. Some need a chair and a cold drink.

Trieste Airport is around 19 miles away, with a driving distance of roughly 22 miles. Rijeka Airport is farther, at about 47 miles. Private parking is available on site in a parking garage, with spaces reserved in advance. The number of spaces is limited, so this is worth sorting before arrival if you are driving.

Check-in runs from 3pm to 7pm from Monday to Saturday and from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays. Arrivals after 7pm require prior contact so that access can be arranged. Check-out is from 8am to 10am. Luggage storage and private check-in and check-out are available, which can help if your travel schedule refuses to respect hotel hours.
