Cod Hole, Ribbon Reefs: Diving with Potato Cod in Cairns

Cod Hole sits on the Ribbon Reefs, an extended chain of coral formations north of Cairns, making it accessible primarily via liveaboard trips. The site itself is structured around two prominent bommies that rise from a sandy bottom, creating a distinct underwater landscape. These coral heads provide extensive surfaces for coral growth and harbour a diverse range of smaller marine life, making the topography engaging from the moment you descend.

The dive profile at Cod Hole is relatively shallow, with the bommies breaking the surface at 6 metres and 10 metres respectively, dropping to a maximum depth of 16 metres on the surrounding seabed. As you make your way around these formations, you'll find soft corals swaying with the gentle surge and a variety of sponges clinging to the reef structure. The natural arch connecting the two bommies offers a distinct swim-through feature, adding an element of exploration to the dive.

The main draw of Cod Hole is its population of giant potato cod (Epinephelus tukula). These large, curious groupers are a constant presence, often approaching divers with a noticeable lack of shyness, providing a different kind of interaction than most reef inhabitants. They patrol the bommies and the surrounding area, their size making them an imposing yet calm presence throughout the dive.

Beyond the prominent potato cod, the site is home to a variety of smaller, resident creatures that thrive within the reef's sheltered areas. You can expect to encounter nudibranchs, often found meticulously grazing on coral and sponges, which are a particular highlight for macro photographers. Wobbegongs and various species of Pyjama sharks (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) are also found here, typically resting in crevices or under ledges on the seabed around the bommies.

The relaxed nature of the site, combined with its shallow depth, allows for extended bottom times and a detailed exploration of the coral formations. The light penetration is excellent, enhancing the vibrant colours of the soft corals and resident fish. This environment supports a diverse ecosystem, offering more than just the iconic potato cod; it’s a living reef system rich in the smaller, often overlooked details that make for a satisfying dive.
