Navy Pier supplies a different kind of encounter: more than two hundred fish species are associated with its coral-covered pylons, along with significant macro life. The emphasis is on watching and searching rather than chasing a particular reef animal on every dive, and sightings naturally depend on the season, weather window and chosen trip.

Recorded conditions are strongest from November through May, while the most useful broader planning windows are March to May and September to November. The choice depends on the target: autumn is the main whale-shark period, shoulder months suit manta and reef activity, and June to November brings the possibility of humpback encounters. December to February is less attractive for many European visitors because northwest Australia is hottest and weather can be more unsettled. March sits across both calendars, so it is best treated as a wildlife-led compromise rather than a simple yes-or-no month.

Exmouth is suitable for all levels. Open Water, PADI, SSI or BSAC Sport Diver-level experience is enough for the sheltered, shallow character of sites such as Navy Pier, provided the diver is comfortable with a giant stride and changing visibility. Advanced Open Water is helpful for divers planning more varied boat profiles, while Nitrox suits those intending several repetitive days. The destination rewards steady buoyancy and comfort in open water more than specialist depth or cave skills.

From London Heathrow, London Gatwick or Manchester, the normal route involves long-haul international flights, an Australian domestic sector to Learmonth Airport, and a road transfer into Exmouth. Total travel commonly takes around twenty-four to thirty hours, depending on connections and overnight layovers, so the domestic flight and final road leg need allowing for rather than treating them as minor details. Long-distance road travel via the North West Coastal Highway is the alternative, but it is a substantial overland undertaking. In Exmouth, the town is compact, yet diving is not generally a walk-from-the-door arrangement: most visitors use a short drive, shuttle or hire car to reach operators and shore entries.

Start with the species target, not a generic idea of the best diving month. Whale sharks mean March to July, mantas are a year-round possibility with particular appeal in the shoulder months, and humpbacks shift the focus to June through November. Book accommodation and boat days early for the main wildlife season and school holidays; remoteness makes a full itinerary harder to rebuild locally. Keep some weather flexibility rather than filling every day, and treat the trip as a mixture of ocean time and Cape Range or coastal plans. A suit that works for repeated entries and long, windy surface intervals is more useful than packing only for the water. Do not assume whale sharks are a year-round certainty, or that Exmouth works like a town-centre dive hub with quick shore dives on demand. Remember that Ningaloo is zoned: wildlife must not be touched or disturbed, marine life must not be taken, and anchoring is prohibited where the zoning says so.

Five to seven days gives Exmouth room to work as a proper regional trip rather than a hurried boat excursion. Divers stay in town, combine day boats with shore sessions such as Navy Pier, and leave space for wind or wildlife changes. A sensible rhythm is often one ocean activity followed by a land day in Cape Range National Park, on the beaches or around Exmouth Gulf. Non-divers have plenty to do, so the destination works well for mixed travelling parties.
