Keep at least one flexible day in the schedule rather than booking every dive against a fixed sequence of sites. Windang works best when the plan can switch between shoreline access and a short boat run. Do not arrive expecting a liveaboard-style programme, a marquee wreck or a single wall to define the whole stay; the value lies in repeating local dives around workable conditions. Ningaloo Reef also carries a separate wildlife expectation, so divers travelling for whale sharks should align their dates with the mid-March to August window rather than assuming the December-to-May diving season guarantees them. A non-diving companion will find more to do when the stay is treated as a coastal base around Lake Illawarra and the Shellharbour area.

Three to five days suits Windang well. It gives a diver time to make shore dives, take a short boat trip and leave room for swell or visibility to alter the plan. Mornings can be used for the most weather-sensitive diving, with the rest of the day kept for beaches, Lake Illawarra and the wider coastline. The destination fits naturally into a broader New South Wales road itinerary rather than a diving-only holiday.
