Located at the Islander Boatshed on Lagoon Road, Islander Cruises has been a fixture of the Lord Howe Island community for more than 30 years. The operation is deeply rooted in the island's natural history, offering a way to experience the unique marine environment through both surface and underwater perspectives.

Whether you are looking for a guided nature tour to see the local turtle populations or a specialised excursion to witness the annual coral spawning, the centre provides a direct link to the island's ecology. The family-run structure ensures a personal approach to every excursion departing from the lagoon.

The centre is owned and operated by Peter, a PADI Divemaster with over 34 years of experience. Having spent his early years on Norfolk Island before settling on Lord Howe in 1989, Peter possesses an intimate understanding of the region's marine biology.

His expertise is backed by decades of collaboration with marine biologists and researchers, including work with Professor Peter Harrison and Dr Andrew Carroll. This scientific connection informs the centre's approach to marine life, particularly during the seasonal coral spawning events.

As a family business, the team includes Peter, his wife Vicky, and their children, Brooke and Noah. This close-knit team is fully integrated into the local island community, providing a stable and knowledgeable presence for all visitors.

The M.V Islander is a 6.7-metre glass-bottomed boat powered by a 60hp Suzuki 4-stroke outboard engine. It is configured to carry up to 27 passengers and one crew member, making it well-suited for lagoon excursions.

The vessel is designed for comfort and utility, featuring a full canopy and zip-down clears to protect against the elements. For those managing equipment, there is ample dry storage available above head height. The boat is also equipped with two easy-access ladders, which facilitate efficient landings on the beach and smooth entries and exits for snorkelling.

The centre provides a range of rental equipment for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes full sets consisting of masks, fins, snorkels, and wetsuits. For those preferring specific brands, they stock Mares masks and fins in all sizes.

In addition to diving and snorkelling gear, the centre also offers rentals for surface activities, including kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. For beach days, they have umbrellas and chairs available for hire.

The waters around Lord Howe Island are home to a diverse array of marine life, including Green sea turtles and Hawksbill turtles. You will frequently encounter various fish species and seabirds throughout the lagoon and surrounding areas.

One of the most significant biological events occurs during the annual coral spawning, which can be observed during specialised night dives. This period offers a unique opportunity to witness the reproductive cycles of the reef's coral populations.

Beyond the larger species, the ecosystem supports a rich variety of corals that form the foundation of the local habitat. The lagoon environment provides a stable home for these organisms, contributing to the overall biodiversity of the island.

The centre is closed during the winter season and typically reopens in October. Most excursions focus on the lagoon, which is accessible via the boatshed on Lagoon Road.
