Located in the heart of the Sunshine Coast, Scuba World has been a fixture of the local diving community since 1979. This family-run operation has spent over four decades refining its approach to diving, focusing on small group excursions that allow for a more personal experience on the water.

Operating as an SSI Diamond Dive Centre, the shop is positioned right on the water in Mooloolaba, making it a convenient base for both local divers and those travelling to the region. Whether you are looking for a quick trip to a nearby wreck or planning a longer expedition, the centre is built around a professional, long-term commitment to the sport.

The team is led by co-director Mike McKinnon, an SSI Instructor Certifier—one of only seven active certifiers in Australia. His high-level professional experience brings a deep level of technical knowledge to the centre, which is essential for those pursuing professional development.

The centre provides a full range of SSI training, catering to everyone from those taking their first breaths underwater to aspiring professionals. They also run a friendly scuba club and organise international dive trips in conjunction with Dive Adventures, allowing divers to extend their experiences beyond the local Sunshine Coast reefs.

Scuba World offers a comprehensive catalogue of SSI courses, starting from the very beginning with the Snorkel Diver Course and Intro to Diving. For those looking to gain their first certification, they provide the Open Water Diver course for both adults and juniors aged 12–14.

Advanced training is a core part of the centre's offering, with courses including SSI Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diving, Navigation, and Wreck Diving. They also specialise in technical and skill-specific training such as Nitrox, Drysuit Diving, and the Diver Stress and Rescue course.

Professional pathways are also available for those looking to make diving a career, covering the full spectrum from Dive Master and Assistant Instructor through to the Instructor level.

The centre operates a custom-designed boat specifically tailored for trips to the HMAS Brisbane and the surrounding reef systems. The vessel is set up to handle the local conditions while ensuring divers have a comfortable platform for preparing kit and relaxing between dives.

On board, you will find snacks and hot drinks provided to keep you fuelled during your trips. The boat is also equipped to handle Nitrox diving, allowing for extended bottom times on more demanding sites.

The shore-based facilities are designed for convenience, featuring a spacious and comfortable centre with toilets, showers, and changing rooms. There is also lockable storage available to keep your belongings secure while you are out on the water.

For those who prefer not to carry their own kit, Scuba World offers a full range of equipment for hire. The centre also provides gas fills and equipment servicing, alongside a retail shop for those looking to upgrade their personal gear.

The local waters are home to a diverse array of marine life. You can expect to encounter various reef species including groupers, moray eels, and turtles. Pelagic fish and eagle rays are also frequently seen around the reefs and pinnacles.

For those interested in macro life, the area is excellent for spotting nudibranchs, particularly at sites like Nudi Junction. You may also find octopus, garden eels, and various species of goby amongst the coral gardens.

Shark sightings are a highlight for many divers, with wobbegong sharks and various reef sharks present. From April to December, you have the opportunity to see Grey Nurse Sharks during monthly trips to Cherubs Cave.

Diving in the Mooloolaba area offers a range of environments, from shallow reef flats to deeper pinnacles and wrecks. Visibility can vary significantly depending on the site and conditions, typically ranging from 5 to 50 metres.

Some sites, such as the Tunnels, offer more structured environments with swim-throughs, while others like Wolf Rock can experience very slight currents. The variety of sites allows for everything from easy reef cruises to more engaging drift dives.
