- Wi-Fi is free for up to 3 h, with adverts; a paid option lets you extend it or improve the speed.
- ⚠️ No public showers. No proper rest area. The quietest places are near the more distant gates.
- That makes the lounge the only proper answer rather quickly, particularly if your next flight leaves early in the morning.
5–10 hrs
You will be landside anyway, so you may as well make something of it.

- As your connection takes you landside anyway, the real question is not whether you can leave but how much time remains. Alajuela is a few minutes away and preferable to a terminal hall.
- The airport runs no city tours.

Sleep nearby plenty of places offer a free shuttle.
- ⚠️ There is no airside hotel. You will have cleared immigration anyway.
- VISA REQUIRED the Alajuela area has plenty of places a few minutes away, from international brands to guesthouses, and many offer a free airport shuttle.
- ⚠️ If your coast flight leaves from the domestic terminal at dawn, tell the hotel: the journey and final walk need planning, particularly with dive kit.
- No airline offers a free overnight programme.
What catches travellers out
There is no sterile transit area
Even on a single ticket, your connection means clearing immigration and customs, going landside and checking in again. It works like a US connection without being one: build it into your margin.
The domestic terminal is outdoors
250–500 m, a public pavement, and a 5–7 min walk. It is not far, but it is neither covered nor designed for anyone hauling 25 kg.

The VIP Lounge, near gate 19, sells day access and it is the only place where you can have a shower.
Clear up the first misconception: this lounge is not reserved for a particular cabin. You can buy day access without status, whatever ticket you hold.
There are no public showers at San José. The lounge shower costs extra on top of entry, which is worth knowing beforehand; after an overnight flight and before a small aircraft to the Pacific coast, it changes the day.
The terminal itself has neither a proper rest area nor a quiet room. The least noisy spots are by the more distant gates, and that is the honest extent of it.
A second lounge also sells single-entry access in the main terminal.
Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for a few quiet hours, with the shower extra.

The diver’s reflex
⭐ Your Drake Bay flight leaves from another building, reached along the pavement
This is the most practical fact on the page. Domestic flights to Drake Bay, Golfito or Puerto Jiménez for Caño Island and Golfo Dulce leave from a small separate terminal, 250 or 500 m from the international terminal. There is no shuttle and no covered corridor: you walk 5–7 min along a public pavement, outdoors, with your dive bag. Allow for it, and allow for rain. This is Costa Rica.
The small aircraft allowance bears no resemblance to your long-haul allowance
Pacific coast routes use very small aircraft, with strict weight limits that are often far below what you brought from Europe. Check the exact allowance on your second ticket BEFORE you leave, and weigh the bag: excess does not get negotiated here; it stays behind.
Use the lounge shower before the small aircraft, not afterwards
There are no public showers at San José, and the lounge shower costs extra. Yet between an overnight flight from Europe and several hours by boat to the island, it is the last comfortable wash point on your journey. Not luxury. Logistics.
