Extra Divers Temple Point

Extra Divers Temple Point is situated directly on the waterfront of the Temple Point Resort, placing you in the heart of the Watamu Marine National Park. This prime location on Mida Creek allows for easy access to the Indian Ocean's varied marine environments, regardless of the tide.

The centre is managed by Matthias and his team, who have overseen operations since its opening. They provide instruction and guiding services in both English and German, ensuring clear communication for international divers.

As an SSI affiliated centre, they offer a structured progression from beginner certifications through to various specialty courses. The team is well-versed in the local marine park environment, helping you navigate the reefs, channels, and coral gardens that define this stretch of the Kenyan coast.

Training is conducted under the SSI framework, catering to divers at every stage of their journey. You can begin your training with the Open Water Diver course or progress through various SSI specialties to refine your skills.

The centre is equipped to handle both new students and experienced divers looking to add specific technical or recreational skills to their logbooks.

The centre operates two dive boats to transport you to the surrounding reef systems. These vessels facilitate morning trips consisting of two dives, as well as afternoon sessions for those looking for a single outing.

For those travelling light, the centre offers full equipment hire, including twelve complete Aqua Lung sets. They also provide underwater camera rentals for capturing the local marine life.

On-site facilities include a dedicated drying and equipment room to keep your kit in good order. The centre maintains a stock of fifty 12-litre aluminium cylinders equipped with DIN valves, though INT adapters are available if required. Nitrox is available for use on your dives.

The reefs are teeming with life, from large pelagics to smaller resident species. You will frequently encounter groupers (Epinephelus), various reef fish, and blue-striped snappers. Larger inhabitants such as blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), and large rays move through the water column, while sea turtles and lobsters (Homaridae) can be found near the reef structures.

For those interested in macro life, the area is exceptional. Look closely around the corals to find nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), leaf scorpionfish, and mantis shrimp. You may also spot octopus (Octopus vulgaris), ribbon eels, and various species of cleaner shrimp (Lysmata) tending to larger fish.

The seabed and reef edges are home to a wide array of crustaceans and molluscs, including crabs (Brachyura), various species of shrimp (Caridea), and moray eels. The intricate coral gardens provide the perfect habitat for glassfish (Atherinidae), pipefish, and many other small, colourful inhabitants.

Diving in Watamu is best experienced between October and March. The reef sites on the outer edges are subject to weather conditions, particularly following the monsoon season, which can influence swell and accessibility.

It is advisable to avoid diving during May and June due to local weather conditions. The centre's location on Mida Creek is an advantage, as it allows for successful departures to the marine park regardless of the tide.
