Blue World Diving

Blue World Diving is situated in Utende, on the south-east of Mafia Island, directly within the boundaries of the Mafia Island Marine Park. The centre enjoys a prime seafront position with views overlooking Chole Bay, providing immediate access to some of the most varied marine environments in the region.

The resort operates with a strong focus on ocean conservation, working alongside the marine park to support daily patrols and participating in Project AWARE initiatives. This commitment to the local ecosystem ensures that the reefs you dive remain protected and vibrant.

As a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort, the team is composed of a dive centre manager, PADI instructors, divemasters, boat captains, and dedicated equipment staff. The professional crew is driven by a shared passion for the underwater world and local marine stewardship.

Beyond standard training, the centre is heavily involved in environmental education. They host regular beach clean-ups and Dive Against Debris events, and they encourage students to earn their special Project AWARE certification through their training programmes.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses for every stage of your diving career. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or work towards their Open Water Diver and Scuba Diver certifications.

For more experienced divers, the curriculum includes Adventure Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and Rescue Diver courses. Specialty training and Divemaster programmes are also available, alongside PADI eLearning options to prepare you for your studies before you arrive.

The fleet includes traditional wooden dhows which offer a spacious and authentic way to reach the dive sites, alongside a more modern fibreglass boat. These vessels allow you to explore everything from the nearby reef flats to more distant sites like the Milimani islands.

Onboard, you can enjoy tea, coffee, and biscuits during your trips. For full-day excursions, such as the Mange trip, the centre provides a picnic on a sandbank as part of the day's itinerary.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit, with a primary focus on Scubapro equipment that is well-maintained. A large wet room is available on-site, allowing you to hang and store your BCDs, wetsuits, and other gear conveniently.

For those staying on-site at the Butiama Marine Camp, accommodation options range from safari tents equipped with electricity, fans, and safes, to recently updated bungalows featuring air conditioning and private bathrooms with hot water.

The marine life here is incredibly diverse, ranging from large pelagics to delicate macro species. You can regularly encounter large schools of fish, including jacks (Carangidae), trevally, and various species of snapper and fusiliers. Larger residents like groupers (Epinephelus), Napoleon wrasse, and moray eels (Muraenidae) are frequently seen patrolling the reefs.

For those interested in macro photography, the area is a haven. You will find a wide array of nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), frogfish (Antennarius), and various species of shrimp (Caridea). Keep a close eye on the sandy bottoms and coral crevices for scorpionfish (Synanceia), pipefish, and flamboyant cuttlefish.

The reefs are also home to spectacular fixed life, including various hard and soft corals, sponges, and sea anemones. You may also spot stingrays (Batoidea), southern stingrays, and various types of sharks (Selachimorpha), including guitarfish sharks.

Seasonally, the area offers unique opportunities. You can snorkel with whale sharks from November to March, observe humpback whales between July and September, and witness sea turtle hatching from June to August.

Diving on Mafia Island is heavily influenced by local tides. Some of the more famous sites, such as Kinasi Pass, Shoulder, and Pinnacle, are known for having strong currents, making them suitable only for advanced divers.

The dive sites vary significantly in character, from shallow reef flats and sandbanks to deep walls and channels. While many sites are accessible to a wide range of levels, the presence of currents and tidal shifts should always be considered when planning your dives.
