Dive sites with Blue World Diving

Kinasi Pass is a famous channel running through the centre of Chole Bay. This site is suited for advanced divers due to the strong currents, but it rewards you with resident giant groupers, pompano, and eagle rays.

Pinnacle is an impressive rock formation that rises from the seabed to near the surface. It is an advanced site with strong currents where you might encounter large schools of batfish, trevally, and even giant manta rays.

Milimani Islands is a favourite for many, featuring large cleaning stations where you can observe various fish species. It is a great place to look for leaf fish, ribbon eels, and different types of nudibranchs among the rocks.

Marine life around Mafia Island

The marine life here is incredibly diverse, ranging from large pelagics to delicate macro species. You can regularly encounter large schools of fish, including jacks (Carangidae), trevally, and various species of snapper and fusiliers. Larger residents like groupers (Epinephelus), Napoleon wrasse, and moray eels (Muraenidae) are frequently seen patrolling the reefs.

For those interested in macro photography, the area is a haven. You will find a wide array of nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), frogfish (Antennarius), and various species of shrimp (Caridea). Keep a close eye on the sandy bottoms and coral crevices for scorpionfish (Synanceia), pipefish, and flamboyant cuttlefish.

The reefs are also home to spectacular fixed life, including various hard and soft corals, sponges, and sea anemones. You may also spot stingrays (Batoidea), southern stingrays, and various types of sharks (Selachimorpha), including guitarfish sharks.

Seasonally, the area offers unique opportunities. You can snorkel with whale sharks from November to March, observe humpback whales between July and September, and witness sea turtle hatching from June to August.

Diving conditions

Diving on Mafia Island is heavily influenced by local tides. Some of the more famous sites, such as Kinasi Pass, Shoulder, and Pinnacle, are known for having strong currents, making them suitable only for advanced divers.

The dive sites vary significantly in character, from shallow reef flats and sandbanks to deep walls and channels. While many sites are accessible to a wide range of levels, the presence of currents and tidal shifts should always be considered when planning your dives.
