Dive Planet Mafia Island

Located in the heart of the Utende Marine Park, Dive Planet Mafia Island provides direct access to some of Tanzania's most pristine underwater environments. The centre is positioned just a short distance from the beach and is only a 15-minute transfer from Kilindoni airport, making it an easy arrival for those heading to the island.

As a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort, the operation is built around small groups and a personalised approach to diving. Whether you are looking to explore the reef flat or venture out on a drift dive to more remote locations, the setup is designed to minimise the time spent on logistics and maximise time in the water.

The team is composed of experienced local professionals who possess an intimate knowledge of the surrounding marine park and its specific currents and seasonal patterns. This local expertise is central to their approach, ensuring that you are guided to the best spots according to the daily conditions.

The centre provides instruction in English, French, and German, catering to an international range of divers. Their focus remains on professional, high-quality service, whether you are completing your first certification or working on advanced skills like navigation or peak performance buoyancy.

The training programme covers the full spectrum of PADI certifications. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Scuba Diver course, progressing through to Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver. The centre also offers Rescue Diver and Emergency First Responder (EFR) training.

For experienced divers looking to refine their skills, a wide range of specialties are available. These include Deep Diving, Drift diving, Night Diving, Multilevel Diving, Navigation, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. More technical or niche training is also offered, such as Cave Diving, Search and Recovery, and Digital underwater photography.

The fleet consists of four vessels tailored to different diving styles. Two speedboats, each with a capacity of 6 to 8 divers, are used for more efficient transit to specific sites. For a more traditional experience, a wooden dhow carries 10 to 12 divers out to the reefs.

For those seeking a more intimate experience, a small private boat is available for up to 2 divers. This allows for a highly tailored itinerary away from the larger groups.

The centre features a large equipment room used for the storage of personal kit and the management of rental gear. They stock Scubapro and Mares equipment for those who prefer not to travel with their own regulator, BCD, or fins.

A freshwater shower area is available for rinsing kit, and the facility includes both hot and cold showers for post-dive comfort. For those undergoing training, an on-site freshwater pool with depths ranging from 1m to 2.5m is used for skill practice and course work.

The marine park is a vibrant ecosystem where you will encounter large schools of fish and various pelagics. You can regularly observe turtles, rays, and stingrays moving across the reef, alongside groupers (Epinephelus) and potato groupers stationed near ledges or structures.

Predators such as sharks (Selachimorpha), jacks (Carangidae), and trevally are part of the regular visitor list. You may also spot moray eels (Muraenidae), lionfish (Pterois volitans), and stonefish (Synanceia) amongst the reef architecture.

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to investigate, including nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), and frogfish (Antennarius). The smaller inhabitants such as various shrimp (Caridea), crabs (Brachyura), and batfish (Platax) add significant detail to the reef floor.

Seasonally, the area is known for the presence of whale sharks, making it a significant destination for those hoping to witness these large pelagics.
