Meliá Zanzibar is a five-star, all-inclusive hotel built for a proper stay rather than a quick stopover. You have a private beach, several pools, restaurants, a spa and enough space across 16 hectares to make the place feel like its own small coastal world. Couples can keep things simple with a sea-facing room and a dinner by the water; families have larger rooms, a kids’ club and organised activities for children.

The Level changes the tone further, with dedicated areas, a private adults-only pool for guests over 16 and an à la carte breakfast. It is the choice for travellers who prefer a little more separation from the main flow of the resort. Everyone else still has the beach, the gardens and the standard facilities at hand.

You are in Kiwengwa, on Zanzibar’s north-east coast, directly beside Kiwengwa Beach. The hotel sits next to 300 metres of white sand, with the sea and a natural coral reef forming the immediate surroundings. This is a beachfront address in the literal sense: you do not need a road transfer to reach the beach.

Stone Town is around 28 miles away, while Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is about 30 miles from the hotel. The drive from the airport takes around 50 minutes. That makes the resort a practical base for settling in by the coast, while Stone Town remains within reach for a separate day out rather than an evening stroll.

The nearest listed restaurant outside the hotel, The Jetty, is around 350 metres away. Amour Beach Restaurant and Zan View Restaurant are further along the coast, at roughly 1.5 and 2 miles respectively. Pwani Mchangani Beach is about 1 mile away, and Matemwe Beach around 3.7 miles away. In other words, you have a choice of staying within the resort or arranging a short outing when the urge for a change of scenery takes over.

The room choice is unusually broad, so the sensible approach is to match it to the way you travel. A garden room keeps things straightforward for two, while a terrace or partial ocean-view room gives you somewhere to sit and a little more visual connection with the coast. The Beach Room and the Ocean Front Romance Pavilion are the sharper choices for couples who would rather wake up with the sea as part of the room than settle for a garden outlook.

Travelling as a family changes the calculation. The Family Room gives three guests more breathing space than a standard double, while the interconnected room with terrace can accommodate four without making everyone share one sleeping area. The larger villas are aimed at groups who want separate living space and a stronger sense of privacy; the three-bedroom options accommodate up to six or seven guests, depending on the category.

Air conditioning is fitted in every room, which is useful after a hot, salty day outside. Tea and coffee-making facilities are also provided, and each room has a private bathroom and a flat-screen television. Selected categories add a terrace or sea view. The Level villas and selected pavilions go further with private infinity pools, while the accommodation range also includes a dedicated Romance Pavilion for two.

A practical caveat for families: cots and extra beds are not available at the property, so the room category itself needs to cover the number of people travelling. Daily housekeeping, Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and room service help keep the evening uncomplicated, particularly when dinner out feels like one decision too many.

The all-inclusive formula puts the main eating decisions inside the resort, with seven restaurants and a buffet breakfast available each morning. The choice runs from international and Mediterranean cooking to dishes rooted in Zanzibar and the Swahili coast. Tamu is the clearest expression of that local side, drawing on the island’s history and traditions rather than treating Zanzibar as decoration on the plate.

Gabi Beach is the relaxed option, reached directly from the sand. Its menu covers grilled meats, seafood, salads and wood-fired pizzas, which is a useful combination when different members of the table have very different ideas about dinner. The setting is informal, with chill-out music and the beach close by. No complicated dress rehearsal required.

The Jetty Bar and Restaurant sits out over the ocean, where you can stop for a light snack before or after dinner. At the main pool, the Pool Bar handles the less formal moments with sandwiches, local snacks, cocktails and beers. Guests staying in The Level have an à la carte breakfast and a menu drawing on Swahili, Indian, Asian, seafood, Mediterranean and Arabic influences.

For a more deliberate evening, the hotel can arrange a private dinner in a villa, a romantic dinner for two at the Jetty Lounge or The Level Restaurant, and a floating breakfast in a villa pool. These are not everyday fuel stops; they are the occasions for when the holiday diary needs one entry written in ink.

Three swimming pools give you different ways to spend a non-diving day: the main outdoor pool, the infinity pool within the spa and the adults-only infinity pool reserved for The Level guests over 16. Around the outdoor pools, you have hammocks, sun loungers and Balinese beds beneath the palms, so a book can remain open for several hours without anyone expecting productivity.

The Spa has an African-inspired approach, with massage, a sauna, six private treatment rooms and an infinity pool. Three treatment rooms include whirlpool baths for couples. There is also an indoor fitness room with a Pilates area, plus a wooden gym on the beach with direct access to the Indian Ocean. It is a useful spread for a rest day: gentle movement, a treatment, then a long period of doing very little.

When you want something more active, the hotel has a tennis court, tennis equipment, table tennis and billiards. Canoeing and windsurfing are available, with water-sports facilities on site. Walking tours, cultural excursions and boat trips offer a change of pace beyond the resort, while possible outings include Stone Town, the spice island, local villages, giant baobabs and safari experiences.

Evenings can bring live music, performances, movie nights, evening entertainment or a DJ and nightclub. Families have a kids’ club, children’s activities, a playground and babysitting services. The result is a place where you can have a full day without putting on a wetsuit, but also retreat to a lounger and let the timetable get on without you.

The airport is about 30 miles away, with a drive of around 50 minutes. Car hire is also available if you want to explore independently, and the concierge and tour desk can help organise outings.

Check-in starts at 15:00 and check-out is by 12:00. You must be at least 18 to check in, and you need photo identification and a credit card in the booking guest’s name at arrival. Cash is accepted as a payment method. Luggage storage is available, which is handy when your departure and your room do not line up neatly.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. There is free public parking on site, although spaces cannot be reserved. A 24-hour reception, 24-hour security, a safety deposit box, laundry and ironing services cover the less glamorous but genuinely useful parts of a longer stay. Children of any age are welcome, but the property does not provide cots or extra beds, so check the sleeping arrangement in the selected room before confirming.
