Laru Beya Resort

Set on the Placencia Peninsula, Laru Beya is a beachfront resort built around the useful pleasures of a diving holiday: a private sandy beach, an infinity pool facing the Caribbean, a restaurant on site and air-conditioned rooms where you can finally stop carrying bags, fins and towels around. The tone is relaxed rather than formal, with balconies, outdoor seating, hammocks and room service helping you settle into the day at your own speed.

The all-inclusive format makes the resort particularly straightforward for couples and families who want meals, drinks, beach time and excursions arranged in one place. There are 30 rooms in total, including suites for two, four or six guests, so you can choose between a proper couple's base and a larger set-up for travelling with family. It is also a useful option if some of your party want sea time while others prefer a massage, a kayak or a book in the shade.

You are in Placencia Village, Belize, on the Placencia Peninsula, with the resort directly on the sea and Seine Bight, a Garifuna village, a short walk away. Placencia Beach is about 3 miles away, while Maya Beach lies roughly 4 miles up the peninsula. The setting gives you Caribbean water on one side and the peninsula's lagoon, mangroves and Maya Mountains on the other.

For eating beyond the resort, The Quarterdeck Restaurant & Bar and Danube are both within walking distance, and Turtle Inn is about 2 miles away. Placencia itself brings more restaurants and evening options, but it is not outside your door: allow roughly 3 miles to reach the town. A golf cart can be hired for exploring the peninsula, which is generally more practical than trying to turn every outing into a logistical exercise.

The room choice changes the shape of your stay. The King Suite with Oceanfront View is the natural pick for a couple who want space and the sea as part of the room rather than a distant postcard. The Queen Room with Sea View keeps things more compact, while the two-bedroom and three-bedroom suites make better sense when four or six people need to share without turning every towel, bag and wet swimsuit into a communal negotiation.

Air conditioning matters in Belize, particularly when you return warm, salty and ready to do very little. Rooms also have a fan, refrigerator, tea and coffee-making facilities, a seating area, a private entrance and a balcony or terrace; selected rooms have sea views. Daily housekeeping keeps the practical side under control, and room service lets you eat without putting proper clothes back on.

The family suites offer several bathrooms, which is the sort of detail that becomes more valuable than a clever view once a group is travelling together. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so keep that in mind when choosing a room if knees, luggage or post-dive legs prefer a ground-level arrangement.

Quarterdeck Restaurant & Bar is the resort's dining room and drinking spot, arranged over three open-air levels with views across the Caribbean. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Caribbean, Mexican and Italian dishes prepared using fresh local ingredients. Breakfast is included in the all-inclusive plan, and the kitchen works with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other dietary preferences.

There is one bar, attached to the restaurant, with local beers and cocktails using Belizean gin, brandy, vodka and rum. A daily snack service keeps the gap between meals from becoming a small personal crisis, while packed lunches are available for days spent away from the table. Happy hour runs from 16:00 to 18:00, with a reduction on imported spirits; wine has its own rules and is not part of that offer.

The restaurant also serves children's meals, special-diet menus and room breakfasts. It is a useful arrangement when your return from the water does not line up neatly with the dining room, although there is no need to pretend that a diver's appetite follows a timetable.

The direct beach access is the main piece of non-diving equipment here, and it comes with sun loungers and hammocks rather than a compulsory programme. The white sand and calm, warm water give you an easy place to spend an unplanned afternoon, while the infinity pool offers a freshwater alternative with the Caribbean in view. Beach and pool towels are available, so you can keep the room from becoming a laundry department.

The water-sports set-up includes kayaks, Hobie Cat sailboats and fishing, with boat excursions also available. Complimentary bicycles give you another way to move along the peninsula, and mini golf supplies a gentler contest for the evening. A golf cart can be hired when you want to cover more ground without turning the outing into an endurance event.

The spa is more than a generic treatment room: massages can take place in your suite, on your balcony or in the dedicated massage suite in the Macaw building. Treatments include Swedish, deep-tissue and hot-stone massage, facials and body scrubs, with couples' massages available. Massage appointments run on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 09:00 to 16:00, which makes planning easier if you want your legs restored rather than merely admired.

Check-in starts at 15:00 and check-out runs until 11:00. The resort offers private and express check-in and check-out, luggage storage, concierge assistance, a tour desk and currency exchange. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and private parking is available on site without reservation.

For the journey from Belize International Airport, the resort arranges domestic return flights to Placencia as part of the all-inclusive package, followed by a shuttle between Placencia airfield and the resort. The flight takes around 30 to 35 minutes, with roughly 5 minutes by shuttle afterwards. A road transfer from the international airport is also possible and takes about three hours, so you can choose between a quicker domestic connection and the longer overland route.

Children of any age are welcome, and there is no minimum age for check-in. Excursions depend on weather conditions, a sensible caveat in a destination where the sea gets the final word. Cash is accepted, and the resort can arrange laundry, dry cleaning, ironing, grocery deliveries and babysitting services when required.
