Divanga Hostel and Diving

Divanga Hostel is built for travellers who prefer a sociable base to a formal hotel lobby. You stay in Taganga, a Caribbean fishing village where the sea, the hills and the local community are part of the everyday scene rather than a backdrop painted on the wall.

You can choose between a private room and shared accommodation, with air conditioning throughout and a restaurant, bar and pool on site. The atmosphere includes live music, evening entertainment and a nightclub, so this is not the place to choose if you want every evening to disappear in complete silence. English, French and Spanish are spoken by the hotel team, which makes arrivals, meals and practical questions pleasantly straightforward.

You are in Taganga, Colombia, at the end of the road from Santa Marta and beside the hills that lead towards Tayrona National Natural Park. The hostel sits in the village, one block from the main road and about a five-minute walk from Taganga Beach. Fishing nets, small boats and the bay give the place its working-village character; this is not a sealed-off resort where the local life has been tidied away.

Santa Marta city centre is around 3 miles away, while Simon Bolivar Park and the Santa Marta Gold Museum are about 2.5 miles away. Playa Grande is roughly 0.7 miles from the hostel, and Playaca Beach around 1.8 miles. Simón Bolívar International Airport is about 12 miles away by road, making the journey manageable but still worth arranging before you arrive with dive luggage in tow.

The room choice changes the whole rhythm of your stay. A private double or twin room suits a couple who wants a door to close and a little more space around wet clothes, while the triple and quadruple rooms make sense for travelling companions who are happy to keep things practical. The six-bed mixed dormitory is the budget-minded option, with a bunk and shared-room sociability rather than hotel-style privacy.

Private bathrooms, air conditioning, wardrobes, a work desk and a private entrance are part of the accommodation set-up. A mosquito net is also provided, which is the sort of small detail you appreciate when the Caribbean evening has followed you indoors. The rooms have noise-reducing windows, useful in a village with music and nightlife, and daily housekeeping keeps the basics in order.

There is no room service, so the sensible routine is to eat downstairs or at the nearby restaurants rather than waiting for a tray to materialise. Free WiFi is available, and the hostel also has lockers and luggage storage. If you are travelling light, the dormitory keeps costs under control; if you are travelling as a couple and want your own bathroom after a day in the water, take a private room.

The Divanga Bar and Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner outdoors with a sea view. Its cooking moves between French, international and local dishes, using fresh local produce with a French influence rather than forcing everything into one culinary box. Meat and fish dishes include chicken curry with coconut milk, steak with pepper sauce and fish with white-wine sauce.

Lunch is more relaxed and practical: salads, vegetarian dishes, bruschettas, pasta, sandwiches, burgers and chips are all part of the choice. The house brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce is the sort of detail worth remembering when you have returned hungry and are pretending that dessert was not part of the plan. Bread has been made on site since 2020, including wholemeal bread, sliced bread and hamburger buns.

Breakfast is a buffet, with American, vegetarian and vegan choices. It is included with private rooms and available to dormitory guests on preferential terms. There is one named bar: the Rooftop Bar, open from midday until 23:00, with creative cocktails and natural juices built around local pineapple, mango, passion fruit and blackberry. It also has a billiard table, so your post-dive debrief can involve a cue and not just a second coffee.

The main place to recover is the outdoor swimming pool, with two different depths and enough room for both a proper swim and the less ambitious business of floating around. Pool toys and a children’s pool are available, while the sun terrace and solarium offer the obvious alternative when you have had enough water for one day. Massages and a public bath add a little more recovery time without requiring a trip across town.

When you want to stay dry, there is billiards, darts, board games and puzzles, including chess, cards and dominoes. Live music, evening entertainment, poker evenings and the nightclub or DJ programme give the hostel a livelier side. You can also use the tour desk to arrange walking tours, local culture activities and excursions.

The wider area gives you more substantial days out. Options include Tayrona and its beaches, the Lost City trek, Minca in the Sierra Nevada with its coffee, cacao and honey, and boat excursions to Playa Cristal. Snorkelling, hiking and fishing are also available through activities away from the property. In other words, you can choose a quiet afternoon by the pool or replace your fins with walking shoes; both are legitimate uses of a holiday.

Check-in begins at 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. The reception operates around the clock, and you can leave luggage in storage if your travel plans do not line up neatly with those hours. A photo ID is required at check-in, and the property asks you to share your expected arrival time.

Taganga is about 15 minutes from central Santa Marta by public transport. You can reach the area by bus from elsewhere in Colombia or fly to Simón Bolívar International Airport, around 12 miles away. Shuttle options from Cartagena are also available. With no car hire service at the hostel and the property located inside the village, arranging your onward transport is more useful than planning around a hire car.

Laundry, a concierge, a tour desk and free WiFi are available. Pets are allowed on request, and smoking is restricted to designated areas. Children of any age are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available, so check the existing bedding carefully when choosing a room for your group.

The hotel presents its sustainability work through support for the communities of Taganga and the Sierra Nevada, including local operators connected with Diving Taganga. The approach covers environmental, social and economic issues rather than stopping at a token recycling notice: guests are encouraged to save water and energy, discover natural activities, learn about the community and cultural heritage, and spend with local businesses.

The hostel also commits to opposing discrimination, child labour, child and adolescent sexual exploitation, prostitution, pornography and sexual tourism. It promotes the protection of Taganga as a destination and asks guests to treat the local community with respect. For a stay in a working fishing village, that matters more than a decorative green badge.
