Bahía del Sol is a beachfront hotel for divers who like their evenings uncomplicated: a proper room, a massage when the shoulders have had enough, and dinner with the sea close by. The setting is a peaceful bay, so the day can carry on at its own pace once you are back on dry land.

You can settle beside the beach with a lounger and parasol, move between the indoor and outdoor pool areas, or take the shorter route to the bar. There is live music and a happy hour, but this is not presented as a full-time party address. It is a place where the useful pleasures are close together: swimming, eating, a drink, and a room with air conditioning when the Pacific has done its sweaty work.

The hotel suits couples particularly well, while family accommodation is also available. Children of any age are welcome, and the large Family Suite gives a group more room to spread out than a standard double. For a smaller party, the king-bed rooms keep things straightforward.

You are in Potrero, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, with the hotel directly on Playa Potrero. The beach is white sand, equipped with loungers and parasols, and the bay is used for swimming, kayaking, snorkelling, diving, sailing, and sport fishing. In other words, the sea is not an excursion for later; it is part of the address.

Penca Beach is about 1.6 miles away, Prieta Beach about 2 miles, and Flamingo about 2.4 miles. Brasilito Beach is roughly 2.6 miles from the hotel. Playa Flamingo, quoted by the hotel at 3 km, is therefore an easy nearby change of beach when you fancy a different stretch of coast.

Tamarindo is about 15 miles away. The nearest listed airport, Tamarindo Airport, is about 11 miles away and around 30 minutes by car; Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport is about 21 miles away and roughly a 45-minute drive. Cafés are available farther along the coast, including Cafetería Arabica at about 1.3 miles and Café Tico at about 1.6 miles.

The rooms are built for the climate rather than for complicated living: air conditioning, a fan, a terrace, garden views, a minibar, and tiled or marble floors. A wardrobe, seating area, desk, television with cable and satellite channels, coffee machine, and tea-and-coffee facilities cover the less glamorous but important business of getting through a dive holiday without living out of a kit bag.

For two people, choose one of the king-bed options if a proper bed matters more than extra sleeping places. The Deluxe Superior and King Sun categories both take that route, while the Standard 1 Queen Bed keeps the arrangement simpler. The Suite adds a separate lounge and kitchenette, making it the more useful choice when you want somewhere to sit, keep food organised, or avoid turning the bed into the only chair in the room.

Travelling as a family or small group is where the Family Suite earns its place: it has two bathrooms and room for up to five guests. Standard rooms with two queen beds also take up to four. Daily housekeeping, room service, free toiletries, a bathrobe, shower, hairdryer, and free Wi-Fi keep the practical side covered, while the terrace and garden outlook give you somewhere to sit without retreating straight indoors.

Breakfast is a buffet served from 7 a.m., with continental and American choices, tropical fruit, and Costa Rican coffee. That gives you a familiar start before a morning in the water, without pretending that every diver wants the same breakfast at the same hour.

Nasu is the beachfront restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Its cooking combines an Italian seafood grill with traditional dishes. Lunch runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., dinner from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and snacks are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The gap between meals is therefore sensibly covered, whether you need something small after swimming or a proper plate later on.

There is one named bar: Mangue Beachfront Tapas Bar, with panoramic views over the coast. The hotel also has a swim-up pool bar and a snack bar, while happy hour runs from 5 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Room service operates around the clock, useful when the day's final task is food without conversation.

The beach does most of the heavy lifting here. You can swim in the bay, take part in watersports, go kayaking or sailing, and book snorkelling or fishing away from the property. Diving excursions are also available, but the nearby independent centre has its own place on the page; the hotel itself is best understood as the base around those days on the water.

For a slower afternoon, the spa offers massage and beauty treatments, with spa facilities, wellness packages, a massage chair, sun umbrellas, and the choice of an indoor or outdoor pool with a hot tub. Yoga is also available. That is enough to occupy the muscles without turning recovery into another timetable.

When land starts calling, the hotel can arrange bicycle rental and bike tours, while horse riding, hiking, wildlife observation, and cultural excursions open up the surrounding Guanacaste area. Listed trips include horseback riding, a sailing and snorkelling tour, Guachipelín Adventure Centre, Monteverde Cloud Forest, canopy tours, Rincón de la Vieja, and Arenal Volcano. Some are close enough for a change of scenery; others are proper outings, so pack patience as well as sunscreen.

Check-in starts at 3 p.m. and check-out runs until noon. You need photo identification and a credit card at arrival, and the hotel asks you to provide your expected arrival time in advance. The minimum check-in age is 18. Cash is not accepted, so plan to use an accepted card for the formalities.

An airport shuttle is available and can be arranged with the hotel. Free private parking is available on site without reservation, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. There is also a minimarket, a tour desk, concierge service, luggage storage, currency exchange, daily housekeeping, laundry, and car and bicycle rental.

Children of all ages are welcome. Extra beds can be requested for guests aged 0 and above, subject to the selected accommodation and availability; cots are not available. Pets can stay on request. Special arrangements include a mandatory New Year's Eve dinner on 31 December, with some guests seated together, so that particular date deserves a closer look before you commit.
