Fathom Five Divers

Located on the south coast of Kauai, Fathom Five Divers has been a fixture of the local diving community for over 35 years. As a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center, they operate out of Koloa, serving as a gateway to the diverse underwater ecosystems of the Hawaiian Islands.

The diving here ranges from sheltered reef flats to remote, high-seas expeditions. Whether you are looking to explore the intricate lava tubes of the island or crossing the channel to the restricted waters of Niihau, the focus remains on small, manageable groups and high-quality instruction.

The team consists of highly experienced, certified instructors who act as mentors for both students and seasoned divers. They maintain a strict ratio of no more than six divers per guide, ensuring that every person on the boat receives individual attention and support.

Their expertise covers the full spectrum of recreational diving, from initial Discover Scuba Diving sessions to advanced PADI certifications. The atmosphere is professional yet relaxed, designed to make divers feel at home in the water.

Fathom Five Divers offers the complete range of PADI training programmes. For those new to the water, the Discover Scuba Diving programme provides a guided introduction to the basics through a one-hour lesson followed by a two-tank experience.

For those seeking certification, they teach the PADI Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and various PADI specialties. As an Instructor Development Center, they are equipped to handle all levels of progression through the PADI system.

The centre operates custom-built boats designed for comfort and stability during transit. For the more remote expeditions to Niihau, they utilise a 38-foot vessel specifically built to handle the crossing of the channel.

To maintain an intimate environment, they strictly limit boat capacity to six people. This ensures that even on longer trips, such as the multi-tank boat dives to Niihau, the experience remains personal and uncrowded.

The centre provides a full range of rental equipment for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes everything required for a complete dive, from regulators to BCDs and fins.

Their shop in Koloa serves as a base where you can prepare for your dives, meet your instructors, and discuss your upcoming itineraries in a relaxed setting.

The waters around Kauai are a vibrant ecosystem, with over 25% of the fish species being endemic to the islands. You will frequently encounter sea turtles and dolphins navigating the reefs, alongside a variety of colourful corals and endemic fish.

Specific local residents include the Bandit Angelfish, which is found more frequently here than on other Hawaiian islands. You may also spot Hawaiian monk seals and various species of Surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), Parrotfish (Calotomus), and Butterflyfish (Chaetodon) amongst the coral structures.

For those interested in macro life, the reefs host a variety of smaller creatures. Keep an eye out for scorpionfish, moray eels (Muraenidae), frogfish (Antennarius), and various species of triggerfish as you navigate the arches and tunnels.

Diving in the Niihau area, including the reefs at Lehua Rock, is best experienced from May to September. This period is ideal for those seeking the most reliable conditions for the channel crossing.

While Kauai offers a range of environments from protected shore dives at Koloa Landing to more exposed remote reefs, divers should be prepared for varying conditions depending on the site and the swell.
