Dive sites with Conch Republic Divers

The Spiegel Grove is a massive 510-foot decommissioned troop transport ship that has become a thriving artificial reef. It is home to a diverse ecosystem including large barracuda and various tropical fish.

For advanced divers, the Duane offers a challenging vertical descent to approximately 120 feet. This U.S. Coast Guard Cutter is often subject to strong currents but frequently offers excellent visibility.

The SS Benwood is a shallower wreck, resting between 33 and 45 feet, making it accessible for a wider range of divers. This WWII-era vessel is a haven for sea turtles and is heavily encrusted with coral.

Molasses Reef is a primary reef site featuring numerous shallow patch reefs. It is notable for sections containing rare pillar coral and is typically reached within 20 to 50 minutes from the dock.

Marine life around Tavernier

The reef systems are rich with hard corals and sponges, providing a complex architecture for marine life. You will find various species of tropical fish, including jacks and barracuda, patrolling the reef edges.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants are abundant around the wrecks and reef structures. Divers often encounter Spanish lobsters, queen conchs, and various species of parrotfish, such as midnight parrotfish and rainbow parrotfish.

Larger residents are also a regular feature of the area. It is common to see sea turtles, yellowtail, and the occasional Goliath grouper patrolling the deeper sections of the wrecks and reefs.

Diving conditions

Diving in this region can involve varying conditions depending on the specific site. Some wrecks, such as the Duane, are known to experience strong currents that require more advanced buoyancy control.

Most of the primary reef sites are located within a 20 to 50-minute boat ride from the marina, offering a range of depths and environments from shallow patch reefs to deeper wreck sites.
