Which country should you choose for a liveaboard in Asia?
Indonesia has the region's biggest fleet, including traditional phinisi, and routes from Raja Ampat to Komodo, the Banda Sea and Alor. The Philippines combines Tubbataha, Visayas macro diving and the wrecks of Coron, while Thailand's routes run through the Andaman Sea.
When is the season for a liveaboard in Asia?
Indonesia has departures throughout the year, with Raja Ampat generally from October to April and Komodo in the dry season. Thailand's Similan season runs from about October to May, while Tubbataha is reached only from mid-March to mid-June.
What certification and experience do you need?
Depending on the route, Open Water may be enough, or you may need Advanced Open Water and a minimum of 30 or 50 dives. Strong currents and remote sites make it important to check the requirements for the particular liveaboard before booking.
How long are the trips and where do they depart?
Trips range from short three or four-night routes to itineraries of a week or ten nights or more. Departure ports include Sorong or Waisai, Labuan Bajo, Khao Lak, Phuket, Puerto Princesa, Cebu, Dauin, Coron and Anilao, depending on the route.
