Set on the coast of São Miguel, the Caloura Hotel Resort is built around the Atlantic rather than hiding it behind a distant view. You have direct access to the sea, natural volcanic pools and a garden setting, with an outdoor pool looking out towards the ocean. It is a sensible choice for divers who want the water close, but also want a proper place to sit down, eat well and let the day wind down without turning the evening into a second expedition.

You are in Caloura, on São Miguel in Portugal's Azores, on the island's southern coast. The resort sits in a protected natural area on the edge of the sea, with direct coastal access and ocean views from the property. This is not a hotel where you need to cross a road and negotiate a beach club before reaching the water.

Baixa d'Areia Beach is around 0.25 miles away, roughly a four-minute walk. The surrounding area is small-scale rather than urban, with nearby places such as Barrocas do Mar, A Casa do Abel and Coriscos Sabores, while Ponta Delgada is about 13 miles away. A car is useful for seeing more of São Miguel, and the hotel offers car hire.

For island days, Lagoa do Fogo is around 9 miles away, with the Reserva Natural da Lagoa do Fogo in the same broad area. Furnas, known for its stew, is about 16 miles away; Sete Cidades is about 29 miles away. You can therefore base yourself by the sea and still reach some of São Miguel's better-known landscapes without changing hotels halfway through the holiday.

Fresh fish is served daily in different variations, which is a useful detail for anyone who has spent the morning looking at fish and would quite like to eat some by evening.

There is one named bar: Bar Jubileu. It serves cocktails, selected wines, local beers and light snacks, with comfortable seating and Atlantic views. A snack bar is also available, and breakfast can be brought to your room. Special-diet menus can be requested, while children's meals and a child-friendly buffet are available for family bookings.

The hotel's outdoor pool faces the ocean and is deep enough for comfortable swimming, with sun loungers, umbrellas and pool or beach towels close by. The private access to natural volcanic pools gives you a second way to get into the water, this time with black rock and the Atlantic doing the scenery work. It is the sort of afternoon where a towel, a book and a decision not to rush are all the equipment required.

For a little more movement, you have a fitness centre, yoga classes and a tennis court, with tennis equipment available. Bicycle hire and snorkelling are also offered, so a non-diving day can still include some time outside without becoming an organised obstacle course. The garden and sun terrace provide quieter places to sit when the pool has had enough of you.

The sauna and massage service belong to the useful end of wellness rather than the mystical end. The sauna is available during the fitness centre's opening hours, and a massage gives you a direct route from stiff shoulders to dinner. Live music, themed dinner nights, board games and an indoor play area add a few options for evenings or family time when nobody wants another swim.

João Paulo II Airport is about 12 miles away, with a drive of around 18 minutes. Ponta Delgada is about 13 miles from the resort. Free private parking is available on site without a reservation, so hiring a car is a workable way to reach the viewpoints, beaches and inland lakes of São Miguel. The hotel also has a tour desk and a 24-hour reception.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. You should give the hotel your expected arrival time, particularly if your flight lands late or your island itinerary has a habit of expanding. Luggage storage is available, which can make the first or last day less awkward when the room and the flight refuse to line up neatly.
