Cabeco Dos Robalos, Algarve: reef and wall diving

Cabeco Dos Robalos is a distinct reef dive in the Algarve, starting your descent onto a sandy plateau positioned around 16 metres. This initial sandy expanse then gives way to a prominent reef wall. The transition between the sand and the wall creates a varied topography, offering different habitats as you move across the site, making for a dive where the terrain continuously changes shape.

As you approach the wall, you'll notice a structure rich with holes and crevices. These features are not merely aesthetic; they provide numerous hiding spots and hunting grounds for the resident marine life. Keeping an eye on these nooks is key to observing the site's inhabitants, as many species are adept at blending into the reef's complex architecture.

The wall itself forms the central feature of the dive. Following its contour, you will find areas populated with large sea urchins, often nestled into the rock work. This indicates a relatively healthy reef ecosystem, with the urchins grazing on algae, contributing to the balance of the local environment. It's a terrain-following dive profile, where your progress is dictated by the natural lines of the reef.

Among the fauna, you can expect to encounter moray eels (Muraenidae), often peering from their rocky hideouts within the wall's many openings. Barracudas (Sphyraenidae) are also present, typically seen patrolling the water column just off the reef, moving with purpose. These predators add a dynamic element to the dive, creating a sense of natural activity around the wall.
