Cela Wall Reef, Algarve: Exploring a Natural Atlantic Wall

The Cela Wall Reef, sometimes known as Cela 12/20, forms part of an extensive natural reef system along the Algarve coast. Unlike isolated pinnacles, this site is a continuous wall that stretches for considerable distances, offering a dive profile that follows the contours of the reef. Your descent typically begins near the top of the wall, which sits between 15 and 17 metres, allowing for a good bottom time to explore the structure.

As you move along the wall, the topography shifts from a vertical face to a more gradual slope, eventually breaking down into a sandy valley. This transition zone, where the reef meets the sand at depths of 20 to 22 metres, is particularly rich. The varied structure of the rock formations and the adjacent sand plains provide diverse habitats, concentrating marine life and offering different points of interest throughout the dive.

Currents at Cela Wall are generally light, making it a comfortable drift dive along the reef system. While strong currents are not a common feature in this part of the Algarve, conditions can vary with wind and tidal influences. Scorpionfish blend seamlessly with the reef, requiring a careful eye to spot, while moray eels and conger eels can be seen peeking from crevices and ledges. The deeper sand patches are also home to various crabs and lobsters.

Beyond the cryptic invertebrates and eels, the reef attracts schooling fish. You'll commonly encounter sea bass and sea bream moving along the wall's edge and over the rocky relief. The combination of a relatively shallow depth and diverse topography ensures that there is always something moving, whether it's out in the open or tucked away in a small cave or overhang.
