Hotel Marina Rio is a four-star base in Lagos for a diving holiday that also leaves room for the town, the coast and a proper evening out. The marina-facing setting gives you something to look at while you recover, rather than another anonymous hotel car park. It is a practical choice for couples, with the centre of Lagos close enough for a stroll to shops, cafés and restaurants.

The mood is easy-going and unfussy: a lounge, a small bar, a rooftop pool and a spacious sun terrace. You can come back from the water, shower, find a chair in the sun and let the day finish at its own pace. No need to turn every non-diving hour into an organised activity; sometimes a balcony and a cold drink are quite enough.

You are in Lagos, Portugal, overlooking the palm-lined marina rather than sitting directly on a beach. The city centre is about a 10-minute walk away, putting its boutiques and places to eat within sensible evening range. Jardim da Constituição is roughly 400 feet from the hotel, while Lagos Train Station is about a six-minute walk away.

Meia Praia Beach is around 0.7 miles away on foot. Praia da Forte da Bandeira and Batata Beach are both about 0.8 miles away, while Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse is roughly 2.1 miles on foot. For a little history between dives, Lagos Castle and the Fortress of Ponta da Bandeira are about 0.7 miles away.

Portimão Airport is 10 miles away by road, and Faro Airport is 52 miles away by road. An airport shuttle is available through the hotel. If you are driving, private parking is available on site and requires reservation.

The rooms are arranged for two, with twin beds, a furnished balcony and air conditioning. If you want the marina to be part of the morning rather than merely a name on the booking page, choose the Twin Room with Marina View. The standard twin room keeps things simpler and still gives you a balcony for sitting outside with coffee before the day starts.

Inside, the useful details are all present: a refrigerator for keeping water cool, an electric kettle for tea or coffee, free WiFi and satellite television. A wardrobe gives you somewhere to put the dry clothes, while the drying rack is handy for ordinary holiday laundry. Daily housekeeping keeps the room in order while you are out doing the more interesting part of the trip.

Bathrooms come with either a bath or a walk-in shower, as well as a hairdryer, toiletries, slippers and a bathrobe. The rooms are non-smoking and have heating as well as air conditioning, so the sleeping arrangement is not left to the Algarve weather. For families, children over 10 are welcome, with extra beds available for 10- and 11-year-olds on request, subject to the selected room option.

Breakfast is served in a light breakfast room as a continental buffet. That gives you the straightforward start most divers actually need: something before leaving, without pretending the hotel is a destination restaurant. Room service is also available when the sensible plan is to eat privately and stop moving.

There is one small bar and a lounge for the drink that marks the end of the day. It is a modest arrangement, but the marina and the town do the heavy lifting once you want more choice. Marle Café and Avenida are about a minute away on foot, while O Farnel is roughly three minutes away. Lagos city centre adds further cafés and eateries after a 10-minute walk.

The practical advantage is flexibility. You can take breakfast at the hotel, keep supplies in the room refrigerator, use room service, or walk out for dinner without arranging transport. After a full day underwater, that is often more useful than an impressive menu you have to make a special journey to reach.

The heated rooftop pool is available from 1 October to 30 April, with sun loungers, pool towels and a broad sun terrace around it. On a non-diving day, this is the obvious place to put the schedule down and leave it there for a while. The furnished balcony gives you a quieter alternative when the rooftop has had enough of you, or you have had enough of everyone else.

For a change of scenery, bicycle rental, bike tours and walking tours are available. Temporary art galleries provide an easy cultural option, and live sports events are broadcast at the hotel for evenings when the group cannot agree on anything more ambitious. The nearby Jardim da Constituição offers another short walk, while Lagos Castle, the old fortress and the historic centre can all be reached on foot.

Golfers can reach the Palmares and Boavista courses in about 10 minutes by car. Car hire is available through the hotel, which is useful if you want to spread your non-diving days across the Algarve rather than keep them all within walking distance.

Reception is open around the clock, with check-in from 14:00 to midnight and check-out from 07:00 to 12:00. Luggage storage is available, so your first or last day does not have to be dictated by the room timetable. The hotel also has a lift, facilities for disabled guests, wheelchair access, a toilet with grab rails, an emergency bathroom cord and visual Braille aids.

WiFi is free in the rooms and throughout the hotel. Laundry and ironing services are available, while car hire can be arranged on site. The private garage is useful if you are touring the coast by car, but you need to reserve a space.
