Set among the fairways of Penina near Portimão, this is a resort where a day can move from golf greens and a golden-sand beach to the pool, spa or dinner without much logistical fuss.

The invitation

Penina Hotel & Golf Resort suits divers who want a substantial base rather than a small guesthouse: 188 rooms, four floors, a pool, several restaurants, a spa, fitness facilities and a direct route to the beach. There is enough on site to keep a non-diving partner occupied while you are out on the water, which is often the real test of a diving hotel.

An English-speaking team handles the day-to-day welcome. The atmosphere is organised around resort living, with golf, tennis, the beach and wellness facilities all part of the same address. You can also reach Portimão for a change of scene, but the practical advantage here is having plenty to do without immediately needing a car.

The point on the map

The resort is in Penina, Portimão, in Portugal, around 5 km from the town centre. Nearby landmarks include the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, Aqua Portimão and Portimão Town Market, so this is an inland resort location with town and leisure options within reach rather than a hotel in the middle of Portimão.

The beach is reached directly from the property and has golden sand. Beach loungers, parasols and the beach bar are available as part of the beach set-up, but access and the use of the beach furniture involve an additional charge. In other words, the sea is close; the bill for settling beside it is a separate matter.

Rooms and nights

The room range covers practical choices for solo travellers, couples, families and two people who would rather not share a bed after a long day in the water. Double rooms come with either a double bed or twin beds, while mountain-view and pool-view options let you choose the outlook that matters most. Family rooms, a junior suite and a studio provide more flexible formats when a standard double would feel cramped.

Air conditioning is available, and rooms include a private bathroom, television and safe. Coffee or tea facilities appear in several categories, while selected rooms add a minibar, bathrobe, slippers, blackout blinds, desk, soundproofing and Wi-Fi. The mountain-view double with a double bed is the more comfortable choice if you value those extras; the twin-bed rooms make straightforward sense for dive buddies. Room service, a wardrobe and toiletries are also available within the room offering, with details varying by category.

The resort is non-smoking, and the property has a lift, so returning to your room with tired legs does not require a heroic stair count. Air conditioning is the useful feature when the Algarve has done its job properly and you come back warm, salty and ready for a shower rather than a conversation.

The taste of the place

Five named restaurants give you more choice than a single buffet room: Sagres Restaurant, Le Grill Restaurant, L'arlecchino Restaurant, Sir Henry Cotton Club and Dunas Beach Restaurant. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are covered across the restaurant line-up, and breakfast is also available as a buffet or in your room.

There is one named bar, Bar Monchique, alongside the resort restaurant and café facilities. The practical rhythm is easy enough to picture: breakfast before heading out, a proper meal when you return, and somewhere for a drink without leaving the property. No cuisine style or signature dish is attached to the restaurants, so the useful distinction here is choice of venue rather than a promise of a particular menu.

Do something, or do nothing

The outdoor pool is the obvious place to spend a surface interval that has turned into the rest of the afternoon. A sun terrace, garden and outdoor seating add room to sit around, while the direct beach access gives you another option when the pool has become too familiar. Beach towels and beach equipment are available, with the beach furniture subject to an additional charge.

For a more active day out of the water, there is a golf course, tennis court, gym and fitness equipment. The resort course is currently unavailable following a wild boar attack, with the option of moving tee times to the championship course. It is also scheduled to close from 24 to 29 August 2026 for green maintenance, reopening on 30 August 2026. The spa, sauna, massages and beauty treatments are better suited to the day when your legs have had quite enough sport, thank you.

Boat trips, island outings, waterfalls, markets, cultural excursions and snorkelling can be arranged through the resort's excursion service. A kids' club, children's play area, games room and babysitting facilities give families their own timetable, while billiards, cycling and hiking provide simpler ways to fill an hour between meals.

What to know before booking

Portimão is around 5 km away, and free parking is available on site. Airport transfers can be arranged through the hotel, and car hire is also available. Reception operates around the clock, with check-in from 16:00 and check-out by 12:00. Luggage storage, a concierge, wake-up service, a safe at reception and a business centre cover the useful bits around travel days.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Laundry, ironing and dry-cleaning services are available, and an on-site infirmary adds a practical safety net. The property has a lift and wheelchair-access facilities. English is spoken by the hotel team, so the essential conversations at reception, over transfers or when arranging an excursion should be straightforward.

Meal arrangements depend on the booking selected, so check what is included before confirming. The beach is directly accessible, but beach access and the use of loungers and parasols are charged separately. That is worth knowing before you arrive with the perfectly reasonable assumption that sand automatically comes free with a resort beside it.
