Madeira Divepoint

Madeira Divepoint is established on the southern coast of Madeira, situated within the Pestana Hotel Madeira Carlton in Funchal. As the only PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre (IDC) and Dive Resort on the island, it serves as a primary hub for both recreational divers and professional candidates.

With over three decades of experience in these waters, the centre offers access to a diverse range of environments. From the sheltered canyons of the local reefs to the deep wrecks sitting off the coast, the variety of diving available reflects the volcanic and complex topography of the archipelago.

The centre operates as a PADI 5 Star IDC facility, meaning it is equipped to train the next generation of dive professionals. This status ensures a high standard of instruction for those pursuing everything from Divemaster to Instructor-level certifications.

Whether you are a complete beginner starting with a Try Scuba Diving session or an experienced diver looking to specialise, the team is trained to handle all levels. The centre is also experienced in hosting larger dive clubs and organized groups.

The training programme covers the full spectrum of PADI certifications. Beginners can start with Bubblemaker or Try Scuba Diving, progressing through the Open Water Diver, Adventure Diver, and Advanced Open Water Diver courses.

For those looking to advance their skills or career, the centre offers Rescue Diver, Nitrox, Divemaster, and professional instructor training through the IDC. All PADI e-learning and certification processes are integrated into the training.

The fleet includes custom-made aluminium boats, including a new 2024 model designed to be more fuel-efficient and quieter. These vessels are powered by 350Hp engines, providing reliable transit to the offshore sites.

For excursions involving dolphins or coastal visits, the centre utilises semi-rigid boats. Boat departures for diving and water sports take place directly from the centre, while specific marine life excursions depart from the Funchal Marina at Ponton A.

The centre is fully equipped for all levels of diving. Nitrox is available for use, which is particularly useful for those completing the EANx certification or for those planning multiple dives a day.

Divers are reminded that a dive computer is mandatory for all outings. For those arriving without their own kit, a full range of rental equipment is provided on-site.

The marine life around Madeira is abundant and varied. In the protected areas of the National Park, you will frequently encounter large groupers and various species of moray eels. The pinnacles and rocky formations are also home to barracudas.

On the sandy bottoms near the wrecks, such as the Wreck Pronto, brown groupers are often found. During the summer months, there is an increased chance of encountering rays within the Arena formation inside the Garajau National Park.

The reef environments, including the House-Reef and the Club Naval canyons, host a wide array of smaller, photogenic species and various types of fish that thrive in the sheltered crevices and canyons.

Diving in Madeira involves a variety of topographies, from shallow reef flats to deeper wreck sites and vertical walls. The local sites include both protected marine parks and open-water excursions.

Planning your dive requires noting the specific site requirements, such as the depth of the wrecks or the specific currents found in the canyon areas. The centre manages departures for both sheltered reef dives and more exposed offshore trips.
