The marine life around Caniçal is defined by its volcanic habitats. On the reefs and walls, you will find large groups of colourful reef fish, including parrotfish, wrasse, damselfish, and bream. Larger predators such as barracuda, amberjack, and grouper are frequently seen patrolling the area, alongside sea turtles and rays.

Macro life is particularly abundant here, especially around the house reef. Divers should keep a sharp eye out for seahorses, frogfish, and various nudibranchs. Octopuses, cuttlefish, and moray eels are also common residents of the rocky crevices and caves.

In the deeper or more open areas, you may encounter pelagic species and various species of sponges and corals that add texture and colour to the volcanic rock. The presence of species like slipper lobsters and spiny lobsters further enriches the biodiversity of the local ecosystem.

The area is known for excellent visibility, often ranging between 25 and 30 metres. The house reef offers very calm conditions, making it a reliable spot for shore entries and training.

When heading out to the marine reserve or the coastal walls, the topography changes to more dramatic volcanic structures. While the house reef is sheltered, boat trips are used to reach sites that offer more varied environments and deeper water.
