Pointe Ronde and the Craters, Roseau: Dominica's Volcanic Reef Dive

Dropping into Pointe Ronde and the Craters, you immediately notice the excellent health of the reef, which begins its gentle slope around 21 metres. The initial terrain here is a gradual incline, a tapestry of vibrant colours where corals thrive, hinting at the rich marine life that calls this healthy ecosystem home. This allows for a comfortable initial exploration before the topography shifts, setting the stage for the dramatic volcanic features that give the site its name.

As you continue your descent, the gently sloping reef abruptly transitions into a more vertical profile, leading directly into the impressive craters. This geological shift occurs around 28 metres, with the deepest reaches of these formations extending to 36 metres. The sudden change in depth and the distinct structure of the craters create a unique underwater landscape, offering a different experience from a typical reef dive.

The most striking feature of the craters themselves is the sandy floor, a fascinating testament to Dominica's volcanic origins. Here, you'll encounter curious small holes from which occasional streams of bubbles escape, a subtle, constant reminder of the geothermal activity beneath. The sand in these areas is noticeably warm to the touch, and if you're curious enough to gently disturb the surface, be cautious, as the heat can be surprisingly intense.
