Piton Bungalows Nature is a small eco-lodge made up of nine independent wooden lodges, cabins and bungalows, tucked into a tropical garden above Deshaies. You come here for space, greenery and a more self-contained stay rather than a hotel corridor, a timetable and somebody else's idea of relaxation. The accommodation is built into the hillside, with open terraces looking towards the Caribbean, the garden or the mountains.

French is the language spoken by the hotel team, so you will be dealing with a French-speaking team during your stay. The atmosphere is deliberately low-key: a communal pool, a reading corner, games, a library and your own outdoor space. For a diving holiday, that means you can return to a place with room to breathe, make your own supper and let the day go quiet without needing a programme.

Your address is in Deshaies, Guadeloupe, on the heights above the town rather than directly on the sand. The site sits at around 300 metres above sea level, between jungle and mountain, with the coast a few minutes away. Grande Anse Beach is about 5 minutes on foot: a long golden-sand beach of more than 1 km, backed by a pond and mangrove where birds gather. It is useful for a swim, a stroll at sunset or a gentle reset when your legs have had enough for one day.

You are also close to the beaches of La Perle, Anse du Petit Bas Vent and Anse du Grand Ba Vent, each roughly 1.5 miles away by the property's surrounding-area calculation. Cluny Beach is about 2 miles away. For food, Ti Poisson la and Paillotte de la Perle are around 1.5 miles away, while Passion Creole is about 2 miles away. Every accommodation is detached and independent, with a private entrance, an outdoor terrace or balcony and a view that can take in the sea, the garden or the mountains. The large bungalow is the sensible choice when several people need to share without turning the living space into a gear-room obstacle course; it has two bathrooms and room for up to six guests. For two, the sea-view bungalows keep things simpler, while the bungalow with a private jacuzzi is the one to choose when the evening deserves more than a chair and a book.

Inside, you have a seating area, sofa and dining space, together with a kitchenette equipped for practical self-catering: refrigerator, microwave, hob, toaster, coffee machine, cookware and dishwasher. A cool drink waiting in the fridge is a small but useful luxury when you come back tired and salty. The private bathrooms include a shower or bath, towels and toiletries.

There is no air conditioning or television. The bungalows are semi-open and naturally ventilated by the trade winds, with a mosquito net for the night. That suits you if you would rather hear the surroundings than a television in the background, but it is worth choosing with your own tolerance for warm tropical evenings in mind. WiFi is free throughout the property, and some accommodation includes a jacuzzi for a more private end to the day.

This is a self-catering stay, not a full-board resort. Breakfast is available on request, and you can arrange for a delivered breakfast on the morning after arrival. A Creole meal can also be delivered on your first evening, which is a sensible answer to the classic travel problem of arriving hungry, carrying luggage and having no interest in hunting for a restaurant before unpacking.

The kitchenettes give you the basics for preparing food yourself, with a dining table, outdoor dining area and barbecue facilities. Local dishes can be ordered for delivery through an external restaurateur, so you can keep the evening at your bungalow rather than getting back into the car. For more choice, nearby restaurants include Ti Poisson la, Paillotte de la Perle and Passion Creole. There is no on-site bar to organise your evening around; the terrace, the garden and your own provisions do that job instead.

The communal outdoor swimming pool is open around the clock and comes with a carbet and reading corner. Sun loungers give you somewhere to dry off and do very little, which is a perfectly respectable activity when the morning involved compressed air and the afternoon involved tropical heat. The garden and terraces keep the setting outdoors, while the pool toys are useful for families.

When you want to move, the surrounding area opens up into walking and cycling routes, canoeing, horse riding and fishing. Boat excursions are available, and the lodge can arrange outings including walks, island visits and a mangrove discovery trip with Blue Lagoon. Snorkelling is also available locally, with masks, snorkels and fins available to borrow, along with beach toys, a cool box and ice packs.

For a quieter afternoon, you have a games room, table football, board games, books and guides to Guadeloupe. The external Beauty and SPA partner in Jarry offers massages, facials, body and skin treatments, nail care, slimming programmes, make-up and waxing. It is an outside service rather than an in-house treatment room, so it belongs in your wider Guadeloupe plans rather than in the category of a quick treatment between pool and dinner.

Free private parking is available on site, and free WiFi reaches the bungalows. A concierge, tour desk, luggage storage and laundry facilities make the property workable for a longer stay, particularly if your itinerary includes several days outdoors. Plan your arrival rather than treating check-in as a drop-in exercise. Reception operates from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00, while the booking check-in window runs from 16:00 to 19:00; the property asks you to provide your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is by 10:00. Private or express check-in and check-out are available, and luggage storage includes access to a shower and toilet for the practical gap between leaving the bungalow and leaving the island.

Children of any age are welcome, with a baby kit including a cot and booster seat available on request. There are no extra beds, and the minimum age for check-in is 18. Quiet hours run from 20:00 to 06:00, and parties are not allowed. The bungalows are not accessible to guests with reduced mobility, except for La Perle, which is partially accessible.
