Built and run by the Bertoncello family since 2002, Résidence des îles is an aparthotel for divers who prefer a proper base rather than a corridor and a kettle. You stay in an equipped, air-conditioned apartment with room to sit, cook and let the day slow down, with the marina and bay as the main view.

The residence was shaped by twenty years of sailing around the Atlantic and Caribbean. That matters here: the place is arranged around practical independence, a tropical garden and an outdoor pool rather than a long list of hotel formalities. You can come for diving, boating, beaches, family stays or simply a few days in Le Marin without having to live out of a suitcase.

The property has 16 apartments and welcomes families, groups and couples. Children of all ages are welcome, and the setting includes accessible facilities for guests with reduced mobility. Smoking is not allowed, parties are not permitted, and quiet hours run from 22:00 to 07:00.

You are in Le Marin, in the south of Martinique, on the Mondésir side of town. The residence sits beside the sea and is around 300 metres from the marina, with views towards the bay and the marina from the property. The pontoons are close enough to make the harbour part of your daily geography, not a place requiring a special expedition.

Restaurants, bars and shops are within a five-minute walk, and a supermarket, boat-rental services, excursions and dive centres are also accessible on foot. Three restaurants listed nearby are around 350 to 500 metres away, so dinner does not automatically mean getting back into the car.

The beaches are a short drive rather than a beach directly outside the door. Pointe Marin is about 5 miles away by road, while Pointe Borgnèse, Anse Baleine and Cap Macre are roughly 4 to 5 miles away. Grande Anse Macabou is about 6 miles away. Montagne du Vauclin, rising to 504 metres, is around 8 miles away by road if you fancy trading fins for firmer ground.

The useful distinction is not the label on the door but how much living space you want around your diving day. A studio suits a couple who want a compact base with a king-size bed, while the one-bedroom apartment gives you a separate sleeping area and more room to spread out. For a family or a group, the two-bedroom apartment is the sensible choice, with space to divide the evening rather than negotiating every square metre after a long day outside.

Every apartment has air conditioning, a seating area, a wardrobe, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with a shower or bath, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. Beds are extra long, which is a small but welcome detail when you are tired and not looking to fold yourself into holiday-sized furniture. Tiled floors also make the rooms straightforward to live in when the climate is warm.

The kitchens are properly equipped for self-catering: refrigerator, stovetop, oven, microwave, coffee machine, kettle and kitchenware. That gives you control over breakfast timing, packed lunches and the important post-dive question of whether dinner should involve cooking at all. Balconies or terraces provide outdoor space, and the views can include the marina and bay; sea views are allocated according to availability and arrival order, so they should not be treated as guaranteed for every apartment.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and apartments also include a drying rack for clothing. Private bathrooms, accessible facilities and family-room options make the residence easier to manage when your party includes different ages or mobility needs.

This is a self-catering address rather than a hotel built around its own restaurant. Breakfast is not part of the stated offer, and there is no on-site restaurant or bar to organise your evening around. In practical terms, you get the kitchen, the refrigerator and the freedom to eat when your dive schedule allows it.

The kitchen equipment covers the basics properly: you can use the stovetop and oven, keep food cold, reheat something in the microwave and make coffee or tea without an early-morning hunt for an open café. There is also an outdoor dining area, so you can take a meal outside when the apartment and the weather both invite you to do so.

For a less domestic evening, restaurants, bars and shops are within a five-minute walk, with Punch Cuisine Bistrot, Kokoarum and LAnnexe all listed nearby at roughly 350 to 500 metres. The residence also has BBQ facilities, giving you another option when the idea of a restaurant is less appealing than staying close to the garden and marina view.

The centre of the property is an outdoor pool built in natural stone, set among tropical gardens. Sun loungers and beach chairs are available around it, giving you somewhere to sit with a drink, a book or the familiar post-dive expression that says conversation can wait a little longer.

A sun terrace, balcony, terrace and outdoor furniture extend the useful living space beyond the apartment. The garden gives the residence its green, open feel, while the pool offers an easy alternative to heading straight back out to a beach. You can also use the outdoor dining area and BBQ facilities when the evening calls for food without ceremony.

For quieter downtime, family-friendly facilities include board games and puzzles. The nearby coastline and marina provide the broader setting for outings, but the residence itself keeps things simple: pool, garden, outdoor space and a kitchen. There is no need to fill every hour simply because the island has provided one.

Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport is about 17 miles away by road, with a driving time of around 30 minutes. Fort-de-France is around 45 minutes by car. Private parking is available on site, free of charge and without the need to reserve a space, which is useful if you are hiring a car for beaches, equipment bags or supermarket runs.

Check-in starts from 16:00 and check-out is by 11:00. You need to let the property know your arrival time in advance. Payment is accepted in cash. Concierge service is available, and invoices can be provided.

Pets are accepted on request, with possible charges. Cots and extra beds can be requested for younger children, with availability depending on the apartment selected. The property has wheelchair-accessible facilities, including a toilet with grab rails, a raised toilet and a lower bathroom sink.

The residence is close enough to the marina and local services for many daily errands to be done on foot, while the beaches are better approached by car. That combination suits you if you want access to Le Marin without giving up the independence of an apartment.
