Set on Baobab Beach in Nosy Be, this five-star eco-lodge has just eight lodges and a villa, all directly on the beach. The mood is discreet rather than theatrical: traditional Malagasy materials, open spaces, broad mosquito-screened openings and the sound of the sea doing most of the evening entertainment.

Bring footwear if you like; the beach is doing its best to make it redundant.

Batumoch is 14 miles away, while Restaurant le Papillon and Restaurant lOasis are both 16 miles away, so the lodge restaurant is the practical evening option unless you are deliberately heading out.

The standard lodge is the natural choice for a couple who want a private outdoor space and a direct relationship with the beach. Its terrace faces the ocean, while the bathroom opens towards a second terrace used for massage. A king-size bed, sofa, minibar, desk and safe cover the useful details without making the room feel like a business hotel with sand outside.

Mosquito nets and wide openings fitted with screens keep the tropical setting usable at night, and each lodge has a fan for air movement. The villa is the better fit for a group of three to six: three bedrooms, three private bathrooms, a large sitting room, an equipped open-plan kitchen, a substantial terrace and a private pool. Its sleeping areas are air-conditioned using solar energy, which is a practical advantage when the night stays warm.

The villas and lodges both give you space to come back to after a full day outdoors, with views towards the sea, garden or pool depending on the accommodation. A ground-floor layout is available, and children of any age are welcome. Cots can be requested for younger children, while the property does not provide extra beds.

Guided outings include fishing villages, a river journey by pirogue, tortoises, lemurs, a waterfall and natural pool, and a visit to a rural school. The journey begins properly at the water: the lodge arranges the boat arrival from Nosy Be to Baobab Beach, around 30 minutes away. An airport shuttle is available from Fascene Airport, and the hotel also offers shuttle services. Give the property your expected arrival time before travelling so the handover from aircraft to boat does not become an improvised exercise in logistics.

Check-in is from 13:00 and check-out is until 11:30.
