The scale matters: you can make the day as sociable or as private as you like.

Couples have beachfront suites with private pools, while families can use villas and connecting-room arrangements. The atmosphere leans towards polished, comfortable and deliberately unhurried, with sunset, live music and the lagoon doing most of the evening's work.

Grand Baie itself is approximately 5 miles from the resort, close enough for an outing when you want more shops, bars or restaurants, but not so close that the hotel feels like an urban base. The Mauritius Aquarium is about 2.7 miles away, and the Sugar Museum and Château de Labourdonnais are within roughly 7 miles. You can also arrange a car through the resort, which is useful if the plan includes more than the beach and the dive boat.

The accommodation is built around suites rather than standard hotel rooms, which gives you more room to spread out after a day in the water. Every suite has air conditioning, a furnished balcony or terrace, a lounge area and tea and coffee facilities. If you are travelling with children or prefer separate sleeping areas, the villas are the practical step up. The two- and three-bedroom villas include fully equipped kitchens, several bathrooms and all-day room service. Families can also use connecting bedrooms, and children can share a parents' room. Air conditioning is available throughout the accommodation, daily housekeeping keeps the return from the beach pleasantly simple, and room service operates from 7 a.m. to 6 a.m.; breakfast delivered to the room carries a tray charge.

Six restaurants give you more choice than a single buffet followed by the same menu every evening. Casual clothing works by day, but dinner calls for smart casual dress; men need closed shoes in the restaurants, except at La Plage, and beachwear stays on the beach.

The most obvious plan is a lounger on the beach, followed by a pool and then another lounger. Two outdoor pools are tempered in winter in the room crescents, depending on temperatures, and sun loungers, umbrellas, terraces and garden space give you several places to dry out without having to perform another activity. The Spa Beachcomber adds massages and scrubs, with a hammam, sauna and steam room for the sort of slow recovery that makes sense after salt, sun and a very early alarm.

If you want to move rather than melt, you have tennis, cycling, table tennis, billiards, aerobics, yoga, meditation, Qi-gong and a fitness centre with personal training. The resort also offers kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, windsurfing and water-skiing, as well as snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips. Evenings can stay low-key with live music and local performances, or become more structured with Beachcomber shows, themed dinners and a sundowner cruise.
