Coin de Mire - Confetti Bay, Mauritius: Southern Reef Exploration

Coin de Mire - Confetti Bay is positioned along the southern flank of Coin de Mire Island, not a long run from the Djabeda wreck. As you drop onto the reef, you'll immediately notice the seabed and rocks are carpeted with a multitude of small, pinkish soft corals. This dense coral growth creates a richly textured landscape, setting the stage for the various reef fish that patrol these waters.

The dive profile here is straightforward, largely following the reef's natural contours. While the reef itself slopes down to around 25 metres, the primary area of interest, and where you'll spend most of your bottom time, is within a shallower range of 3 to 16 metres. Staying within this zone allows for extended no-decompression limits and maximizes light penetration, which truly brings out the colours of the corals.

This site is a healthy reef ecosystem, supporting a high concentration of reef fish amongst its corals. While the soft corals provide much of the visual appeal, keep an eye out for larger visitors. Eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) are sometimes sighted cruising over the reef, adding a dynamic element to the dive. Dog-tooth tunas (Gymnosarda unicolor) are also occasional visitors, often seen patrolling the deeper edges where the reef drops off.

Turtles are known to frequent Confetti Bay, often found resting or foraging on the reef. Their presence adds another layer to the site's appeal, especially for visual documentation. The combination of abundant reef life, potential pelagic encounters, and the vibrant soft coral gardens makes this site particularly popular among underwater photographers, offering numerous photographic opportunities.

While it maintains a generally calm feel, typical for a sheltered bay, the open ocean influence around Coin de Mire means that currents, while generally mild here, should always be accounted for. The site's exposure to the north-westerly aspect of Coin de Mire can at times experience the deeper currents that are influenced by broader ocean patterns, though these tend to be less pronounced within the bay itself.
