Le Mur du Nord, Mayotte: Pelagic Encounters on a Deep Plateau

Le Mur du Nord, or 'The North Wall,' is not a sheer drop but an expansive sandy plateau located off the northwest coast of Mayotte, outside the lagoon's protection. This site opens directly to the Indian Ocean, with the plateau beginning to form around 30 metres. Its unique structure, a relatively flat sandy bottom interspersed with numerous coral bommies, creates a distinct environment for deeper encounters with oceanic life.

As you descend, the clear, deep blue of the open ocean surrounds you, a stark contrast to the shallower reef dives. The sandy floor, starting at approximately 30 metres, is punctuated by isolated coral 'patates.' These vibrant, reef-building structures rise like oases, providing shelter and sustenance for smaller reef fish, which in turn attract the larger predators that define this dive.

The inherent exposure of Le Mur du Nord to the open sea and its atypical layout makes it a prime location for encounters with powerful pelagic species. You will need to keep an eye on the blue, as this is where much of the action unfolds. Sharks (Carcharhinidae), various rays (Batoidea), and schools of tuna (Thunnus) are regular visitors, cruising along the interface between the sandy bottom and the deeper water, constantly hunting and surveying their territory.

Beyond the powerful sharks, the site also offers the potential to witness the speed and agility of sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus), whose distinctive dorsal fins cut through the water with precision. Large barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda), often forming shimmering schools, also patrol the area, adding to the dynamic predatory landscape. Diving here is less about intricate macro photography and more about observing large, free-ranging marine animals in their natural, undisturbed habitat.
